Snarky Brides

Netflix

So, Netflix finally got their shiit together and are offering their services up here in the Great White North.

But, only the instant, streaming stuff.  No mail out things.

We're trying to decide if it's worth it to subscribe.  It's only $8 CAD/month.

Right now we rent movies rather sporadically from Blockbuster (which is a 5 minute walk down the road) and have a somewhat ok On Demand set up through our cable company, but I don't think we've ever used it.

So, please, help me decide.

Re: Netflix

  • we have netflix..... we get the dvds and they sit around for over a month.... but we watch the streaming videos ALL THE TIME. its the only reason its worth the $$ for us. The streaming is GREAT. We have it hooked in to our tivo and watch it there. You can also hook your computer up to a tv and do it that way! I love it!

  • I think it's worth it. I love Netflix. I think the instant library is pretty awesome too. We got into a few great shows watching instantly. You could always try it out and cancel if you aren't getting your money's worth.

  • Meh. It's alright. I don't hate it, but I'm not in love with it either.

  • My FI and I just signed up for it a few weeks ago and watch the live streaming stuff all the time.  The first week we had it, we declared it a great value for the $9 a month we were spending.

A few weeks have passed and my only complaint is that the live streaming library does not get updated too often.  We watch the television show series' available on there all the time but right now I feel like there are a lot of "guy" movies available versus things we normally watch.  We haven't taken out any DVDs yet.
  • The U.S. version has a lot. Can you just try it and cancel after a month?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic BabyFruit Ticker
  • Yeah, we can try it free for a month, and you can cancel any time.  I suppose we'll give it a shot.

I'll have to look up what our bandwidth allowance is for our internet connection.  It would suck major balls to go over and have to pay!

  • We got Netflix a couple months ago and LOVE it.  Mainly because we've watched tv shows that we never saw on tv (like all of the season of 24, the first season of Lie to Me, all of the Criminal Minds seasons).  It was totally worth it to us because we've mostly used the live streaming stuff.

  • Pretty much everything we watch is on Netflix, so definitely worth it to us.
  • Do it! I watch my netflix streaming all the time. Right now I'm watching arrested development which is pretty much the most hilarious show ever. They also have a lot of documentaries if you want to get educated about any subjects.

You get a free trial for a month. If you don't like it, cancel it before the month is over.

ETA: I'm in the middle with it too. It seems like nothing is available for it right now. But I want it. So I think I'm going to wait until they actually have a selection for Canada.

  • Do you have Redbox or the new Blockbuster Express (basically a blue Redbox)?  Those might be worth your time.  I used to do Blockbuster through the mail until I had seen everything I wanted to, and even then we moved to a rich area with a nice library that had every movie in the world.

FYI - the online content tends to not be brand new stuff if that's what you're after.

No, we have neither of those things.  Canada has Blockbuster stores.  And On Demand through your cable.  But that's it.

  • I love Netflix.  I've never been a fan of Blockbuster stores, and aside form those all we have in my area to rent movies are little mom and pop stores so Netflix is like a saving grace for me.

Side note: Blockbuster recently filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. This doesn't surprise me at all. I remember H bought stock in Blockbuster a couple years ago. I tried to tell him that was a bad idea.

  • blockbuster died when netflix hit it big.. I feel like Redbox was just the final nail in blockbuster's coffin.

but really.. I miss video stores. I remember going when I was little and running around finding the perfect movie. It was a treat when my parents took us there to rent movies.. it meant dinner on the floor in front of the tv (which my mom called picnic night). We'd all gather round a table cloth on the ground in the dead of winter and watch movies and eat together. aww memories.

I'm with you there.  Our local rental place had a 5/5/5 deal: 5 movies, 5 nights, $5 for the entire rental.  When I was in high school my friends and I would go down on a Friday, rent 5 movies, and then watch them all weekend long, getting fat on junk food.  Good times.

  • Blockbuster Canada is a separate (sort of) entity, so we're still ok  For now.

Our Netflix sort of seems like the suck, so Blockbuster might survive yet.

  • We stream instantly through our Wii..

But you get Mad Men, and Dead Like Me, and Heroes.. I LOVE Dead Like Me.. Her dry, sense of humor is awesome...

It looks like it would be worth it for the movies.. I would definitely do the trial and see how you like it..
  • Thanks all.  We'll do the trial and see how it goes.

  • Netflix is how I got hooked on Mad Men!  But I don't think it was instant viewing.

I may or may not have, however, watched like 4 seasons of Bones on instant viewing when I was home sick for a week.

The US instant viewing has gotten so much better lately, too.

That's an excellent point, and one I didn't think of.  When Netflix started streaming in the US the selection was terrible too, so maybe they're working on buying up the licenses they need to stream good stuff in Canada.
