Smoking is incontrovertibly bad for one's health, though, whereas eating meat and seafood, in moderate quantities, is not. Actually, going vegetarian without knowing how to get a balanced diet is pretty unhealthy.

My husband hates the smell of brussel sprouts.  Says they smell like hot, rank farts.  Does he forbid me to cook them?  Of course not.

Then again he knows better... I do what I want

But how is it a breach of trust? You eating meat isn't him eating meat.
  • My FI hates Brussels sprouts too. I love them. I cook them with the windows open. Compromise!
  • I'm sorry, it sounds like you're in a terribly controlling relationship based on this post. An adult should be able to tell the difference in quitting smoking and making a lifestyle choice for someone else. So he quit and made you quit something you loved just so you'd both be equal?

  • I think if either of you give up anything, it should be because you WANT to, not because it's a relationship deal-breaker. That's pretty much like blackmail. Not a good foundation for a realtionship.

  • People who eat fish only (to the exclusion of other meat) are pescatarians, technically, not vegetarians.

    Vegetarians don't eat fish either.

At least, this is my understanding.

  • One of the reasons I have heard people use regarding fish is that there is a belief that fish don't feel pain, therefore they don't suffer. However, I am pretty sure a study came out recently that debunked this.

Wella nd a lot of people are vegetarians for the "green" effect too right?  Fish don't add bad things to the atmosphere? (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

<div>Yeah, I have a "pescatarian" friend that eats seafood but no other meat--she does it because (if you eat the right fish) the environmental impact is small, at least compared to other meat.</div>

How do some fish have a higher environmental impact than others?

    Edited for clarity
  • Depends on how many fish can be caught per boat. How long the boat has to be out. How much processing the fish needs and if the processing plants are close or far away which contributes to gas. Hardcore environmentalist know all this stuff and keep up with it regularly.

It also has to do with where the fish are on the food chain. Those near the top of the food chain are less sustainable to eat because it takes so much energy for them to grow and they usually take longer to reproduce.

A little fish that eats plants is only one step away from getting energy from the sun (via the plant). A shark that eats a tuna that ate a bunch of medium sized fish that ate a ton of little fish that ate plants that grew from solar energy is much more removed from the original energy source, therefore requiring more energy overall to make it to your plate.

ETA: This is also a big reason why people think it is more environmentally friendly to eat plants instead of animals. The plants get energy directly from the sun and we can get it from the plants. But if we eat animals they they first have to convert the energy from a lot of plants that convert it from sunlight.

I don't totally by this line of thinking myself, (not the chain of energy, that is obvious, but the belief that we should never eat animals just because they are higher in the food chain) but I know it is a part of the "greeness" or being vegetarian. It isn't just because of the cow farts.

  • FI is less picky than he was when we first started living together.  I cook food and put it in front of him and he eats it whether it is his favorite food or not.  The compromise is, if I cook it, he eats it (or he doesn't eat, or he makes something for himself, yeah right).  Even if I make squash or sweet potatoes (he doesn't like either), he will still eat it.

The only real food rules we have in the house are these...

1.) If I take the time to season the meat with something, you are not to put ketchup on it...unless it is a hamburger.

2.) Organic milk only please (either 1% or skim...I prefer 1% and he prefers skim).
  • edited June 2012
Also try to find a way of cooking things that he likes so you like them more.  I was never a big fish eater but he likes to make fish so I had him try a bunch of different ways and now we have a few go-to recipes that I like.

But I agree, get a few pans u can cook seafood with, and make it the nights he isn't home or in things like pasta, stir fry, etc.
