Do you think this is practical?

Re: Do you think this is practical?

  • T & I were going to do this to move to Ireland for a year.

Neither of us have a career yet (a job yes, but not a career). We have no kids, no mortgage. I think it'd be doable.

Oh, but then again, we were planning on working in Ireland to pay for our living there. Unfortunately Ireland wont take us :(

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Do you think this is practical? : Wouldn't it be similar to a maternity leave? Maybe it is different in the US, but in Canada it is common to take a year off for mat leave. Although travelling the world IS a little different...

My job (public high school) allows 6 weeks paid maternity leave with an additional 6 weeks unpaid where they will hold my job. If I have to take more than 12 weeks of leave for any reason I will be terminated. It was the same with the retail company I worked for (PetSmart).

[QUOTE]They aren't homeowners, but that seems like all the more reason not to be financial idiots.

Well, that's not really a fair thing to say!  They just have different priorities than you do and that doesn't make them idiots.  I mean, they might be looking at you and all the responsibilities you've got and think that's crazy!  Everyone has a different plan for themselves; different does not equal dumb.

I personally think it's really romantic to go and just be with your husband with no distractions/responsibilities/worries!  Will they have to work their butts off when they get back to be financially stable, sure.  But will it be worth it?  I have a feeling it will be for them.

I agree with you that the company wouldn't pay you for longer than 6 weeks. Legally, they are only required to pay you for 6 weeks plus you can collect 15 weeks of employment insurance. However, it is common in my area to take advantage of the extended parental leave of one year (unpaid). Legally, they cannot fire you if you are granted extended parental leave. I wouldn't take the 1 year off, simply because I think it is way too long to leave your job. I'm just saying it is common where I live to do so. In fact, my sister is on mat leave right now. She had her baby in April, and will be returning to work next April. I also have two female coworkers on mat leave right now, who are both taking the full 12 months off. Common practice is to employ somebody to replace that person for a 1 year contract. My last job was a 1 year contract to cover a mat leave.
