Floods= really bad mosquito problem

Are you guys having the same problem?

Every time we open the door at night we get bombarded with them in our house!

We are going to a crawfish boil Sat.,  so what type of repellent should I get? What do you use?

Re: Floods= really bad mosquito problem

  • I use whatever seems to have the most chemicals in it. Terrible for the environment and possibly me? Totally. Do I get bug bites? Nope. And yes, we're having the same problem. Our mosquitoes are now approximately the size of a SmartCar.

  • I know a thing or two about mosquitoes.  Motherfuckers are so ridic up here they could probably literally carry you away.

I don't have any recs for specific repellents - OFF! is probably a good one.  Just don't do things like wear nice smelling lotions or things like that.  I used to keep dryer sheets in my pockets when I went to watch my ex-boyfriend's softball games, that may or may not have worked.

Up here our cities do really well with city-wide spraying of mosquitoes so they aren't too bad in the city limits.  When I go home to the farm now though (especially with the way it's been flooding up there non-stop for years) it's insanity.  I'll usually just say fuckit to repellent and just go inside!

Some people I know who farm though will buy mosquito magnets.  Those things are the shiit.  And they work pretty well.

  • Hahaha LC I was thinking the same thing last night. I thought one was a skinny moth but nope my H said it was a blood sucker :0

  • The only repellent I buy is the Deep Woods Off.  It is the only thing that works for me!  It has like 30% DEET which is not good for you, so definitely shower it off when you get home.  But seriously, it is the only thing that actually works.

    I hate misquitos!!!

Those candles work really well. I cant stand them smell but they really keep mosquito away during our monsoon season.

Edit: Citrinella oil/ candle! I could not for the life of me remember that name
  • i'm allergic to mosquitos, so repellant is my best friend. The deep woods off is usually my go to.

  • mosquito = state bird of SD right now

I can't do DEET, so I do the Clean Feel OFF mist with picardin.  It works really well for me.

    missed you!
  • OFF! is what I use in my home and on my kids. We went camping recently and used the family care. It worked really well.
  • I prefer the deep woods OFF! as well. I swear I must have done something to piss off an important mosquito in another life.  I can be sitting with 10 other people and I will get like 20 bites to everybody else's 2. It drives me crazy. On a side note, is it weird that I love the smell of bug spray? It reminds me of summer and lakes so it makes me happy.

I do a combination of stuff.  In mosquito land, I use Avon's Skin So Soft for my normal moisturizer/SPF, then I have a concoction of Off! mixed with a little extra DEET that I spray on my ankles, wrists, and anywhere I'd normally dab on perfume.  Doing that, I managed to travel through a bunch of very mosquito-y places (Thailand, Cambodia, Fiji)  bite-free.  I'm normally a mosquito magnet.

I distinctly remember one night last summer where I got over 10-15 bites on my hips and legs. I was wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, I have no idea how they got through my pants.

I second the recommendation for Avon Skin So Soft. It's not going to work quite as well as Deep Woods with DEET, but it'll help a lot, and it won't smell as gross and leave you feeling sticky. That's what I hate about bug spray. So if you're going somewhere where you don't want to be smelly and/or you can't use something as hardcore as the Deep Woods stuff, try that.

Also, I've had a little luck with the Off! fans. You clip them on to your belt loop, turn on the battery-powered fan, and it creates like a little mosquito force field around you. I mostly used it on my porch last summer, not moving around, but it's worth a shot.

<div>I'm going to try these this weekend. I also must have pissed off a mosquito god in another life because I get covered in bites when no one else does. Every bite swells to the size of a quarter and hurts! Nothing works. Grrr...</div>

I use the Off Deep Woods stuff. I'm a magnet for mosquitos.

    Story time-
One year when I was younger and went to camp, I got over 100 mosquito bites in a week. I was miserable. I had the top bunk and it hurt to even climb down. And the worst part... I had to borrow shoes from the nurse because the ones I had were rubbing all the bites around my ankles.

Yes, that was worse than chicken pox!

  • You could bring me with you. Whenever I'm around, nobody else gets bitten.

My mosquito repellants tend to be as chemical as possible - if there's DEET in it, it's my friend.

  • Mosquitos LOVE me. I was allergic to the ones in IL, since apparently they are different from the ones here. But I like the Avon stuff. It worked better than anything else I tried.
