Pain Scale. How does yours look?

So I was on the phone with my doctors office and they asked me what the pain was on a scale of one to ten. I told he it was about a 5. She told me I should come in right away because that must be relly bad. I don't think a 4 is really that bad. This got me to thinking about how different each person's pain scale must be. Tell me your pain scale using things that you can judge with, but you don't have to fill in all of the numbers. 1. Stubbed toe 2. Paper cut 3. Tattoos 4. Rubbing ink off of a tattoo during the process 5. The arthritis in my foot and hip 6. Wisdom teeth removed 7. a bad burn 8. A hunk of cement to the forehead. 9. The few days of Breast Augmentation (felt like someone was sitting on my chest) 10. Natural Childbirth (this is the most pain I have ever endured so it's my 10)

  • This requires a lot of thinking.  I'll get back to you on that.

  • This is a great question. I'm a nurse and I have to ask this all day long. I recently went to the ER and they asked me that question and I was like, "fuuck if I know?!"

Mine is probably similar to hers, but I'll list it anyway:

    1: Clipped nail too short.
    2: Stepped on a Lego.
    3: Hangover headache.
    4: Left a bruise.
    5: Tattoo.
6: Wisdom teeth (I got dry-socket, feel bad for me).
    7: Tonsillectomy.
    8: I broke my tailbone.
9: Got hit by a car, or something similar.
10: I'm not even conscious at this point.

  • 1. paper cut/pinched skin (the chunk out kind), stubbed toe (I'm really clumsy)
    2.
    3.
    4.
    5. The chest pains I had in school from out of proportion boobs and school bags that were too heavy.
    6. A scald I had on the back of my hand as a teen... took some months to heal.
    7. The cramps I had from age 11-16 that would have me laid up and off school for a week and a half every month. Doctor used to tell me it was normal and I wasn't in pain.
    8.
    9.
    10. Worst I've ever felt - the uti I had for three months. Thought I was dying - looked so bad my sister called an ambulance for me (not that it came. I got to deal with a doctor who didn't want to do the home visit and didn't like 'no, I can't walk' for an answer).

  • Good question. I hate when they ask me that question, because I generally have a pretty high pain tolerance, so my 4/5 is usually something that needs to be looked at because for most people it's a 7/8.

    1. paper cut

  • 1) gas

  • I'm surprised by some of these. If period cramps are worse than getting wisdom teeth pulled, I'm going to be fine.

  • Id rate cramps like, a 2 or a 3. I would think my vag to ass tearing apart would hurt more than cramps.
  • I mean, my period cramps are bad enough I take the day off sometimes and curl up on the couch with a heating pad and ibuprofen and try not to move, but I have a feeling that when I get my wisdom tooth out next month, it's going to hurt way worse.

  • I'd understand the cramps if there was endometriosis involved or something. I had a friend who had to be hospitalized nearly every month during her period.

But for me, it's just like, meh. I'd say a 2.

I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was 18 with local anesthetic and never really felt pain, then, or in the week after.  To me my teeth felt annoying, I would describe it as an "itchy" feel, but to me, nothing severe enough to warrant taking the Vicodin the dentist gave me.  I didn't even take any Tylenol.

I've never been good at putting pain to a number, and I have a really high tolerance to pain.

    1.  Those silly little things I do on a regular basis like walking into a door frame (seriously).
    2.  Tattoo
    6.  Tattooing after an hour or so
    7.  Tattooing after 2 hours
    8.  Cramps that meds don't fix
    9.  Tattooing hours 3-5....yes I'm insane
    10.  Failed IUD insertion.  45+ minutes of my gyno in my vag

I don't know if childbirth will beat that.  At least with contractions, they come and go.  Having the speculum in for 45+ minutes was pure torture.

ETA: I've also had two concussions, but the could deal with the pain with Tylenol.  It was the dizziness that made me miserable.  I guess the pain was a 5-6, maybe.
