[QUOTE]Regarding customer service jobs:  honestly, I think<strong> it makes a big difference if your customers have ever worked in the service industry</strong>.  I have worked retail, bartended, waited tables and I can tell you:  I always hang up my clothes after trying them on, I don't unfold clothes willy nilly all over the place, when I get served a drink, a plate, or whatever, I always say thank you.  ETC ETC ETC  Shiitty customers are definitely not exclusive to one age group.

Yes! I have worked in apparel and waiting tables and it really does make a huge difference.

You can ALWAYS tell when someone hasnt. I think that people in service deserve to be shown the utmost respect, because that shiit is hard. I did my fair share, and I think it made me a better person atleast in how I interact with people.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Let's talk about age stereotypes : My problem with a lot of the maintstream music (and movies) coming out these days is there is nothing new - it's all just remixes and samplings and remakes of something that someone else already had a hit with.  Personally I think that my "everyone gets a trophy" statement is the cause of this.

<div>I don't think this is true at all!  There is TONS of new music out there.  Granted, when I hear that new "Forever Young" song I want to throw my radio in the bathtub.</div><div>
</div><div>But still, there are new musicians creating new music every single day.  So I think it's unfair to say that there isn't any creativity in music anymore.</div><div>

Nebb feel free to stop by my place of employment any time. you should see the fitting room I have to clean-it's madness! Every once in a while a really nice, helpful person will come along and clean up after themselves but most people just pile clothes everywhere.

And Reddy, I had to giggle at your very Portland stereotypes because they are so true! If FI and I go to the Portland Sat Market this weekend I'll be on the lookout for all of them ;)

I totally agree with this! I worked at McDonalds and a clothing store in high school and bar tended for a few years in college.  Those jobs definitely changed my perspective of the service industry and I respect employees of all industries much more having been on the other side.  I think most high school students can learn a lot from holding a part time job in the service industry.

<div>Haha, I think I was so hard on that age group because it is most of my friends. I've managed younger kids at work, and I've been in a car accident with a 90 year old, so I'm not above saying I stereotype by ages, because I do, bad. </div><div>
</div><div>But also I am a little bit of each of those groups (besides the older ones, and I think I might get there some day too, lol) I can relate to younger or younger acting people because I have experienced it, and I think my worst prejudice is for older people (55+) because a) I haven't experienced it yet, and b) they don't tip. </div>

[QUOTE]These are for Portland only and they are VERY judgy, just whatever came to mind, this is no-holding-back-reddy: Under 20- Wears a lot nicer clothes, shoes, and backpacks than I ever have. Dresses brightly. Has layered hair that was flattened with a hair iron, male or female. Always has an iPod on. Always has their online profiles public and usually has inappropriate pictures and comments visible. Can't spell. Can't tell the difference between ANY homonym or heterograph. Are loud and obnoxious on the train. Drinks pabst and smokes cigarettes. NO work ethic whatsoever. Grossed out easily. Under 30- Pretentious college students still living off mom and dad. Changed majors 10 times. Never held a job or car longer than a year or two. No 401k. Tech-savvy, but uninspired by technology in general. Starting to understand the concept of work, but not applying themselves. Roommates. Starting to drink better beer. Starting to have better sex. Starting to learn to say "no" and go their own way, but they don't know what way to go. <strong>Under 40- Ugh 80's kids. They love butt-rock and Goonies and anything that brings them back to their childhood.</strong> They aren't ready to be 'the next generation' of anything, let alone take on our messed up country/politics. So they order their Netflix and sip their slurpees, and wait for their next paycheck. They have young kids, and a job they have to cover their tattoos for. They don't go out on Friday or Saturday night anymore. Under 50- Squares. Suburu driving, nature hiking, tofu-eating squares. Don't rock the boat! They definitely have 401ks. And then some. They send their kids to the private hippy schools. They vote, and control the vote.  70+- Mega-Squares. Obsessed with my red hair. Penny pinching. Please don't hit me while driving, kthnks.

Though I don't <em>really</em> feel the need to defend my generation, I sort of do.  This definitely describes me & a lot of my friends.  It really is more of a nostalgia thing not a fear of "next generation" anything.  The extreme nostalgia comes from realizing that we all graduated high school 20 years ago (and those kind of things) and aren't ready for "middle age yet" - and that's about where your description stops having any similarity to my circle (understanding this was your spin on Portland).  Most of the things said here are not like any of the under 40s I know.  Not sure what they feed them in Portland.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />   And I fear a lot more when the under 30s or under 20s are going to start taking over the government.

  • kjh- I'm glad you spoke up, I've really been on this, "why do the 80's kids LOVE the 80's so much?" kick for a while,(maybe because I was raised in the 90's and there is nothing awesome to cling to there?) but I'm really glad you did chime in, because I haven't made it to my 20th high school reunion (almost to ten!) and who knows, maybe then, I will turn into a nostalgic, clingy, Ebay-toy-buying loon, (talking about my bro there people, not kjh).

This has to do with the whole 'me not experiencing something so it's harder for me to understand' thing I was saying earlier. I just assume I understand my friends, because, well, we're friends, but they are a bit older than me and I don't know what that's like.

  • Actually, right after I wrote that I thought, "Alanis Morrisette?"

But in general, I didn't have the happiest childhood, so that could be why clinging to childhood stuff from any generation is foreign to me.

But also I didn't like the 90's, I can't think of one thing, specifically from my generation, that I loooove or want to come back. Original Nintendo? That's all I got.

10000 Comments 5 Love Its Combo Breaker
I always wonder what, people who still dress like its the 80s - who CLING to the awful clothes and hair styles, think about the people they see around them dressed normally? I just cant imagine not seeing the disconnect there.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Let's talk about age stereotypes : I don't like the 80's either, lol, but maybe you had to be there.  UGH, that's another pet peeve of mine, people born 85 or after that won't drop the 80's. They pften claim to remeber things they were too young to remember. Music, fine. Fashion and movie re-makes? Let it gooo! They weren't even there! /endrant

I was born in 89. I totally remember the 80s.

Okay, not really. But I remember the 90s!

I can understand the arguments about 20 something year olds and under being lazy. I'm 22 and the people I work with have always been lazy. It drives me insane because it makes me and other 20 something year olds who do work hard, look bad. I will be honest, I don't work while I'm in school but I also don't ask my mom and dad for money. I've been paying my own bills since I was 18 and lived on my own since I was 18/19. I moved home for 8 months to transfer schools and had to wait until the next semester. BUT I was also working two jobs full time (9 am usually til about 3 am on some days). It sucks being stereotyped as lazy because of how many self-entitled people grew up with me.

<div>I honestly think they, a) still have the same clothes that they did from 1989-92 and aren't the spending-money-on-clothes type, or b) try on modern clothes and don't like the way they look (like Monsta was saying).</div><div>
</div><div>The woman I knew had her doctorate, spoke 5 languages fluently, and was a warrior of a woman, so I know she was well aware she was being weird, and she just rocked it anyway. I still wondered where she got her clothes (ebay, estate sales, garage sales?).</div><div>
</div><div>Another couple I know owns boats and cars, and are very well off, but I know they just don't give a damn about fashion, they've been wearing that stuff for 20-30 years and it's comfortable and they'll continue, dammit. (they wear acid wash jeans and bad sweatshirts everyday).</div>

hee hee, it's okay AVS, you don't have to justify not working because you are in school! That is just the way our world works, I understand, I did it for a little while too. :)

ETA: but I do know what you mean about your generation giving you a bad rep with the work ethic thing, yeesh, I really want the 20-somethings to up their game in the workforce.

  • I think a lot about age when I'm on these boards.  The longer I'm around, the more I realize you can't stereotype by age.  Some of you are only a little older than my daughter, and yet I view you as contemporaries.  I also work with many younger people on a daily basis, so I'm comfortable with that.

I'm 47.  The 80's were very good to me!  Sadly, I've been victimized by more than one shoulder pad and "wall of bangs" hairstyle in my life. *hangs head in shame*

I did for awhile last year when I was waitressing. The only reason I quit the job was it was a waste of time lol. I was promised 2-3 shifts a week and never got them. We weren't allowed to punch in until we got a table so some nights I went home not having made anything because it wasn't busy enough for 90% of the employees they had scheduled for the night. I finally got tired of wasting my time and quit. It was costing me more in gas than what I was making. My one manager also made me unreasonably angry.

This city also hates students I swear. It's almost impossible for a student to get a job here during the school year and if you do, they refuse to work around class schedules. My first boss here told me "so skip class, you're scheduled to work". Yeah, not paying 6 grand to skip.
