AW- New dog!!!

Say hello to Roxy! She is about 6 years old. We think she is a shepherd/husky mix, but we'll find out this weekend when we go to the vet. She was a rescue (a friend's neighbor had to give her away).

Cute! I love puppies. I also refer to all dogs as puppies, regardless of age. It drives FI bonkers. Her coloring is really pretty.

Make sure you have a TON of toys for her. She sounds like she'll be a fairly energetic pup. The more toys you have, the more variety she has, the more entertained she is and the less likely it is that she destroys something of yours.

I call all dogs puppies, too.

Her previous owner was really sad to give her up, but her living situation didn't allow for a dog. H has wanted a dog for a very long time, but I have never had any pets, so I was hesitant. Roxy is already house trained and people, baby and cat trained, so I feel better about it.

ETA: Her previous owner also said that Roxy is a calm dog. She's only been at our house for a couple of hours and she's already spread out on the floor on the verge of sleep.

Husky mixes are the best! Congrats! Puckett is husky/golden but people ask us all the time if he's part shephard.

I personally think that even the calmest of dogs needs plenty of toys. My dog is usually passed out asleep on the couch. But during his brief periods of activity each day, there had better be something for him to play with or he will find something. It's much easier/cheaper to buy dog toys than replace your property. Also, buying puppy toys is amazingly fun. Some of them are downright adorable.

We got her some toys. I feel bad that we both have to work tomorrow, but she'll only be alone for five hours, and we'll leave her in the back yard so she can run around, but I still feel bad.

I might be coming here a lot with questions, though, because like I said, I haven't ever had a dog before.

SEWF- if she is part husky (which I'm guessing she is), you NEED toys. Huskies are extremely smart dogs and can be super destructive. They're also known to eat ANYTHING. I could give you the list of shiit Puck's eaten (i.e. ingested, not just chewed) in the past year But, if we get a good hour of running (or even some obedience training) every day, he's wonderful.  He also sheds like a mofo.

Huskies are known for being really independent too (but super loyal), so don't be offended if she ignores you sometimes. Half the time, Puck is in the other room just minding his own business. But the other half of the time (or if he can tell one of us is sick/sad), he does not leave our side. He's a wonderful dog.

Do you have a fence? Are you sure she won't jump/dig?  

Toys, toys, and more toys.  She'll be fine alone for a few hours, especially if she's older and housetrained, etc.  Actually, Puck gets annoyed on the weekend when we're home all day

We took her for a walk when we got home. We'll get her more toys this weekend, but we got her a few at PetSmart today.

I'd be nervous leaving a husky mix in a fenced in yard for 5 hours by herself the first day. Did the previous owner ever fence her? Then it might be ok. But unless you know that she's not a digger/jumper, it's a bad idea. Huskies can be great escape artists.

If you are leaving her outside all day, make sure there is plenty of fresh water available. Do you have any sort of shelter outside for her in case of rain, wind, etc.? I know that where I live, it's illegal to leave a dog outside when you're not home if you don't have a shelter for the dog.

Sorry. I'm not trying to come across as being all 'tsk tsk' or anything.  Just passing along all of the warnings we've heard while owning a husky  They are unbelievable escape artists.

Oh and another, don't buy toys at PetSmart. They are usually a total rip off. I take Guinness to the store to "pick out" which toys he likes. Then I usually order them from Amazon for a lot cheaper. I also buy a ton of toys at Marshalls/Homegoods/TJ Maxx. They have the same toys as pet stores, for a fraction of the price.

This is a huge hit in our house. I don't leave it on the floor because I don't want him to destroy it. I just take it down when I can watch him play with it. But he loves it because it's an interactive toy. He gets so excited when he gets a ball out. Also, it comes with extra squeaky balls (and you can order extra) for if they break a squeaker.

This is also one of his faves. We have it in 2 sizes. We have the largest size, which I have stuffed with small squeaky toys from PetSmart. He has a blast trying to get them out. We also have a medium size for play fetch in the house. It's good because if it hits the wall/furniture it can't hurt anything. Also, it's very durable. His teeth crack/break normal rubber squeaky balls.

How is your vet planning to tell you what kind of dog it is?

Don't waste your money doing a DNA test, as even the priciest and "best" ones are not all that accurate. They have a 20%+ rate of false-positives. Just not worth the money.

Our garage isn't connected to the house, so there is a door from the garage into the yard. Until we can get our doggy door enlarged, we'll leave the door open for her. That may have to do for week or so. And I get what all of you ladies are saying. We're still trying to work out the kinks and figure out what to do. It all happened so quickly, but we didn't want the lady to have to send her to a shelter.

H has also said he plans on coming home during lunch to check on her, so she'll be alone from 10:30 am to 2pm, then 2:30 to 4:45. So I'm hoping she'll be ok.

As far as toys go, I swear by Kongs and elk/deer antlers. They are the only thing that holds up in my house. Kongs are awesome, put some plain yogurt or peanut butter in there and freeze it for a few hours and then give it to them, keeps them busy.

Honestly, I won't leave my dogs unattended in the back yard at all. Wayyy too many unknowns can happen. Not only can they get out, but I've known people whose dogs have had allergic reactions to insect bites when they aren't home, people can posion your dog, people can steal your dog (it happens more often than you think) so just be careful. There have been some horror stories over on The Nest pet board of people who leave their dogs outside and bad stuff happening.
