Save the Date Dilemma

My fiance and I just signed our contract for the venue for Oct. 26. We are in the process of interviewing photographers and are going to decide on one possibly this week so that we can take engagement photos. I wanted to add one of our engagement pictures to our save the dates but am worried that the save the dates will be out too late. Should I just do regular STDs without the picture? How long does it take for STD to come once they've been ordered? If we wait to do the pictures, we have to wait about a week to get them back and then order the STD and then send them out. What do you all think?

Thanks!

Re: Save the Date Dilemma

  • You can send the STDs 6 months before the wedding. Factor a week or so to get the engagement pictures back, and another weekish to get the STDs back. The STD isn't an invite, it's just a nice heads up that a wedding is in the future.
  • We're wedding date twins! (yay) I sent our STDs early because a lot of our guests will have to travel. (My entire family included.) We couldn't pick a place that would have worked for everyone, so we picked what works for us (and half of our guests). If you don't have that many guests traveling a long distance, sending them in April will be just fine.
  • They say 6-8 months to send them out. It takes about a week to two to get them back.

Save the Dates aren't a must so if you decide against them, no one will really know.

  • I voted to wait until you get the photos back, cause it would be a nice use of the engagement photos. However, as mentioned, Save the Dates are not necessary.  So, it ultimately doesn't matter what you choose - there is no "wrong" way to do something that is not needed in the first place. Go with what you feel is the best choice.

  • We're going to be sending out our save the dates in mid-March and just did our engagement pics this past weekend so that they'll be ready to be sent out at that time. How long is the turnaround for the photographer?
