Did you register for china?

I'm feeling chatty today.

Did you register for china?

Do you already have it?

Would you ever use it?

If you only get a partial set, would you buy the rest of the set yousrself or return all purchased pieces for cash?

And, go!

Re: Did you register for china?

  • Well, I am struggling with this actually.

I don't have a matching dishes set, so I am definitely going to register for every day dishes.

But china - not so sure. I have my grandma's china, which is beautiful in it's own way and I love it because it was my grandmas (who passed away when I was pretty young), but it's not my style. I can't decide if I should register for china that is my style, or be glad for what I have and leave it at every day dishes.

I probably wouldn't use my grandma's china, but I think that if I got something more modern I would use it.

  • We're not registering for it. We talked about it, because friends of mine basically said, "oh you have to register for it! No registry is complete without it!" So, FH & I talked. We want to replace the dishes I have (they're my cheap college dishes) with nice ones. So we didn't register for fancy china. Plus, we wouldn't ever use it. Maybe for Christmas and Thanksgiving... but we don't do formal dinners very often. And when/if we do... who the heck cares what the plates look like??? (well. that was his reaction, haha)

No we did not, no we do not, no we would not! If paper plates weren't considered bad, Id use that often. Easier to clean and I wouldn't have to do the dishes!

We aren't registering for china.  My grandma is going to be giving us hers (no idea what it looks like).  Also, the chick at BBB made me so stabby that I ended up going home and removing all of the silverware and flatware from the BBB registry.  She kept saying things like, "Well what if you entertain more than 8 people?"  and when I said our house wouldn't fit more than 8 people around the dining room table she responded, "What if you buy a bigger house?"

She also talked down about how crappy everything that I selected was in quality.  "Those will rust in three years."  "Those are the kind of plates that people choose if they only want to use them for 2 years."

  • No. We don't need fancy dishes. We don't have dinner parties -- if we entertain, it's a low-key affair with friends sitting on the couches playing video games or watching movies. I don't understand the need for china, crystal and fancy flatware.

We did not register for china.

I do have a set that was my grandmother's that she bought in the 1970s/1980s for hosting (Lenox Moonspun, I believe it is called.) It's pretty - ivory, with a floral ivory border. Simple and pretty.

If it turns out that we need to register for more gifts, I would consider it. But as of now, nope.

  • We did register for china. My grandma always used her china for Sunday dinners and I think thats a great tradition. I would use mine for that as well. I believe its good to feel fancy every now and again.
  • We semi did.  With FI's job and where he plans to be career wise it won't be shocking for us to be hosting random dinner parties.  Rather than picking ubber expensive china, we picked a boxed set that has a 4 piece setting for 6, and it's in classic white, and the bonus part is that it's American made so I don't have to worry about judgey people.
  • We haven't registered yet but I don't think we will be registering for China. We are not at the point in our life right now that we would ever use it and we don't have much room to store stuff that we don't need right now but maybe need later on in life. I feel like its becoming less common to use China anymore. My Mom used to have a China cabinet when I was growing up and I only saw her use the China a few times. Now they are in a new house and I have no idea where any of that is because he never uses it anymore.
