August 2012 Weddings

Need help on decor and favors/ escort cards!!!

So I talked to my FMIL today and she mentioned that she wanted to get together this weekend and talk about flowers (she is a florist). She told me that what I wanted was really expensive especially because my heart is set on real flowers. What I chose were lilies and roses for the whole thing, my bouquet, the centerpieces and any other place that we felt we need flowers. She asked me what I was looking for and I told her simple elegant and she said those are elegant but so far from simple and very expensive. Then my fiance wanted to talk to me about the escort favors...we originally decided to make cake balls for the favors. The FI basically told me that it would be very time consuming and stressful because we would have to make them 1-2 days before the wedding and he said the week will be stressful enough without trying to worry about making those. He said he thinks there will be enough to snack on with a popcorn bar, cake, hor d'orves and dinner. He told me to try to come up with something more simple but still elegant. I don't want to do just paper cards that the guests will throw away but the Fi doesn't want to give them anything edible either. We are doing bubbles and bells for when we leave that night but I don't anyone will keep those. So now I have to start pretty much over and figure out decor that is simple yet still elegant and the same thing goes for the escort cards/favors. Does anyone have any ideas they would like to lend me?

  • I too love Lilies and roses but had to give up on them because of the cost. I would trust your FMIL and ask for her recommendations that come in your colors in that month. That will be the easiest way to cut costs and still use real flowers. I talked to my florist and when I told her I loved sweet pea's she recomeneded hydranga's for an August wedding instead, as they would fill up the boquets with less blooms without wilting quickly. See if she can reccomend idea substitutions.

In regards to your escort cards, I understand your wanting to personlize everything ( I am a DIY freak and have been wanting to have my hands on every detail). But I am beginining to realize there are going to be things that I don't want to have to worry about in the close days for the wedding. Think about your need to sleep, get your hair done, visit with your birdesmaids, travel, enjoy your rehearsal dinner... and once you put all those things together you'll probably start understanding where your fiance is coming from.

Good luck with your new ideas!

  • We are opting to put our escort cards in wallet size frames....and then the frame doubles as the favor....we have picked out brushed nickle frames that are very classic and elegant....and they run about $1.25 a frame! :)

  • I am doing silk flowers, so not really helpful there sorry...

    Favors:
We are putting candy in nickel&dime bags (those little inexpensive bags with cinch tops) that are white and we are going to add red and black ribbon to make them all of our colors! :)

We are using bubbles as our thing for people to use when we leave the church (before the reception), we aren't doing a huge reception exit though..

Also, my aunt is making "groomscake" and she wraps it in wrapping paper and attached to the ribbon is a card that says "sleep with this under your pillow, and dream of your true love" and that will be passed out either before the wedding or during the reception :)

  • I have a few different favors because as some have mentioned, not everyone will keep them...even the edible ones.  I have bubbles with labels, inexpensive seat card frames, and bookmarks that I made that came out really nice.  I figure between the 3 there should be something that they will keep.  If nothing else, the bookmark.

  • I think you already have a lot as far as food/desserts.  Have you ever made cake balls? I did once and wanted to pull my hair out...they took waaaaay longer than I expected and I only made one batch (one cake).
