August 2012 Weddings

Is this normal

I told my caterer that we had one underage guest, four people that don't drink for religious reasons and 4 pregnant girls coming to the wedding. So I didn't want to pay for the bar for those 9 people. She seemed to look at me funny. And she said No problem.

But I wonder if no one ever requested to not pay for tose people before.. or if that was something that they didn't do unless asked, and figured that some people "forget" to mention that and they just charge them anyway.

I just want to be sure this is normal and I am not sounding like a cheapskate

  • I would have assumed they just have a set price for the bar. I can't imagine they're going to change it all that much for that little of people and I'm sure the venue accounts for a percentage of people who may not drink when they give you that set price but, I could be wrong.

  • Well I am paying per person. 22.00 a person for alcohol. We don't have the option for a set price or tab,

  • I think its strange that they didn't charge you for the guests that were drinking age. Our venue offers a package where its a set price per person but they charge for all drinking age people. I think that the point is that the people who end up not drinking and those who may only have 1 drink will offset the cost of the heavy drinkers.

All that being said, if they're willing to do it for you then I wouldn't worry about if its normal. Just be glad they gave you the deal :)

I think it is awesome they are willing to give you a break on those people! My venue will charge me for anyone over 21 but not for the kids for obvious reasons :)

  • I wonder if she really did take those 8 adults off the count.  If so, then that's great for you!

  • We are paying on a consumption basis for the bar not a set price per head.

  • Our venue said that after our required minimum of 100 guests- our vendors and children are half price.

  • We're paying per-head, and we're also taking off people who won't drink.  We have one pregnant girl and two recovered alcoholics who will not drink under any circumstances.  We're paying a lower cost for them for the non-alcoholic beverages, same as the teenagers.

  • My venue has consumption bar only, but if it was per person I would have asked about paying less for non-drinkers too.

  • i2012do, that's really funny that they're all due in the same timeframe- must be something in the water! They'll have lots of common ground to talk about, too.

My venue is charging the per person bar rate for anyone over 21, no break on the people who don't drink for one reason or another (there are a few). It's really nice that your venue gave you a break on that, it's always nice to save some money.
  • So how is your venue going to identify the non drinkers? Seems like it would be pretty easy for a bride (not you!) to say she has 20 guests who don't drink just to save money.

we're paying a lower rate for teens.  I didn't even think of pregnant women but I don't think we actually have any oddly enough!
