Can my dress be fixed? (rant)

Everything has been going so well for us. We've been a little behind schedule on most things, but it's all worked out perfectly. Except one thing. And that one thing, of course, has to be The Dress.
You see, I got my dress in October, one month after FH proposed. Maybe that was a bad idea, I don't know. But when I found The Dress, I asked if they could do a corset back instead of a zipper. They said "Yes, absolutely, no problem. That'll be an extra $100, please."
I had my final fitting in November. The Dress looks perfect, but they didn't give me the corset back I wanted. I ask why, and they casually say that because of the beading/embroidery, they can't do a corset back. Here is the link to my dress. I'm bummed, but what can I do?
I last tried it on in May. Admittedly, I gained 5-10 pounds. But The Dress fit, EXCEPT right under my bust. WTF?! That's just ribs and skin, no fat! Double WTF?! PANIC.
I've lost 5 lbs, but no inches. I called the original David's Bridal where I bought The Dress, and they said they could put in a corset back if needed. But I've moved, so I can't actually go in. Thus, my mother is mailing me The Dress, and this Tuesday I'm going to my nearest David's to see what they can do. Dear God, please let this corset back be my saving grace in the one and only thing that has gone wrong in the wedding planning process.

  • Just wondering why would have any fittings in November of last year for a August wedding?
  • My dress is all lace and beading and they put in a corset for an extra $70. The store ordered it that way so when it came in from the designer it already had the corset. Did you buy the dress off the rack? I can't see any other reason why the store would be putting in the corset instead of ordering it with one. I am als curious about why you had any fittings in November.

  • i can see absolutely no reason why your fittings should have been last november.  I bought my dress in June 2011 for my August 2012 wedding, and they wouldn't even schedule my fittings til at least June 2012.  The dress literally sat in my closet for 6 months after it came in.

But, what happened, happened. It sounds like you're left with a dress that doesn't fit perfectly with about a month to go.  A few things come to mind here:
    1. you best be getting that $100 back if they didn't deliver on a request that you paid for.
    2. What do you mean "doesnt fit below the bust"? too tight, too loose? They might've just altered it weirdly and can fix that part.
    3.  After looking at your dress - you WILL probably lose a lot of the beading/embroidery if you put in a corset back - almost that whole center section. the beading below it might look odd afterwards too.....so i could see a store's hesitation with even trying it.  they definitely shouldn't have promised you something that they won't try.

    Solutions?
    1. you're doing one of them...taking it to a 2nd opinion.  if they cant fix it, try somewhere else.
    2.  if you're THAT unhappy with it, start looking for other dresses....but most won't be available in a months time, you'll probably be stuck with sample or off the rack gowns.
    3. be happy with a 95% perfect dress. unless it's REALLY ill-fitting, nobody will notice =)
  • Prayfully that works. I am with everyone else. My last dress fitting was this month. They should not have started your dress fittings until around March and you should have had at least three with your corset in your dress. Sorry you have this drama with David's Bridal.

  • My dress arrived from my mother's today. It is still too tight just under the bust, to the point the zipper won't close. The gap is only about an inch, but we'll see what the nice ladies in the alterations department say tomorrow.
In the meantime, thanks for all your nice thoughts.
I did get the money back from the first David's Bridal, but I'll probably end up paying that much to get the dress altered or have a corset back put in anyway. I have no idea why they made me have a final fitting so soon after buying the dress, which did come off the rack. I'm a little upset with the DB in Billings, Montana. Obviously.
Keep your fingers crossed for me! :)

  • It's going to cost almost $200 (yuck), but the kind ladies at my new David's Bridal said a corset back is no problem to put in. It will get rid of a little beading, but hardly any, and it'll look fine. And it'll be done in time for me to pick it up before going home for the wedding. :)
    BIG HUGE RELIEF!
