Wedding stuff I don't get

I'm a bit of a PW today. Sorry!

I was wondering if there is any wedding stuff you don't get that everyone seems so wild about on the blogs.

For me, it's moustaches on sticks. What's with those? No offense, I know lots of people obviously like them, but why? I'd love it if someone could explain that to me, because I just don't get them.

Well all I know is that they use them as props for photobooths.
Once I think of something that I really don't get that people do I'll come and update this post. I'm gonna go search now.

ETA; Trash the dress shoots. I think they are HORRI-BLE! they rub me the wrong way.

  • I don't get the tears of joy packets. Personally no one but our parents and our bridal party will be crying so why spend so much time making all those little packets? That's just my opinion though.

I agree with PP the mustaches are props for photobooths. I may be making some for mine : ) Along with other silly things on sticks!
  • I don't get groom's cakes at the wedding. At the rehearsal dinner, fine. But a wedding is about coming together and all that so why does he need his own cake? Don't get it. Waste of money to me!

<div>Woah, I have never heard of this before. I just googled it, and I agree. Just my opinion, but I think they are awful. They rub me the wrong way too.</div>
  • I think I dislike the moustaches on a stick because they're really overdone... at least in my neck of the woods.  They were in 90% of the wedding pictures of my facebook friends last year and I was getting so sick of seeing them.

I don't get the garter toss, bouquet toos, or torturing the WP to dance together! FI and I aren't doing a trash the dress...we're doing pics after the wedding because we're crunched on time the day of the wedding...but ruining your gown in trash the dress doesn't sound appealing to me! I am a mustache person..I made them for my photobooth!
  • i don't get Trash the Dress, why would you ruin an expensive purchase is beyond me. Also the garter toss and bouquet toss I don't get those either, what's the point plus most people are forced up there and it is some times uncomfortable watching it.

  • I don't understand the tears of joy packets either...I'm also not a fan of TTD sessions.   I also don't get I-spy games at the table...how many things are there possibly to spy in a reception hall?  And...coloring books for kids.  At nearly every wedding I have ever been to, it's usually the little kids tearing up the dance floor before anyone else.

I agree with you.  And also people who have time to actually blog everything that they are doing for their wedding.  It is helpful to others but I have no time to do that.

I also don't get the tears of joy packets.  It just seems like another expense to me.

  • I dont get most of this stuff either.. I totally do not get the moustaches I understand they are props but why??

I get trash the dress.. for some what else are you going to do with your dress??  I would never do this because I love my dress WAY too much to trash it..

  • Yes, the TTD shoot!! I hate how they glorify wasteful behaviour - look at how much fun I'm having trashing this dress that some women would kill for and that I wore just once! Plus, I sort of feel they are for brides who can't get enough of the attention - "after my engagement shoort, bridal shoot, boudouir shoot and the wedding day, I felt like I really needed to parade around in front of the camera, you know". Now I'm probably offending some of you out there, sorry.

I don't get grooms cake either. Just share the one cake.

  • I don't like Trash the Dress either - though I'm not going to lie - some of the pictures come out pretty sweet. I don't know what I'll do with my dress - but I won't be covering it in paint for pictures.

I don't get non-edible favors - like things with the couples wedding date and names on it. Sorry - but unless you're my close close close family - I don't want a coffee mug with your wedding date on it. Lol.

It's a Southern tradition. It's become more mainstream because people like adding stuff to their wedding to make it "special." FTR I am not doing one, but I don't have an issue with them.

I don't get this either!  I love candle favors because I love candles, but when the votive holder has the couples names, date and monogram etched into it, it's a sure bet that it's going into the trash as soon as the candle burns down.

  • The TTD seems wasteful.  If you really never intend on wearing it again, donate it to a charity that will give it to a bride that coudn't afford a dress.

I have the mustaches because I'm a goofball and we have a photo-booth with other props as well.

The grooms cake (if I do it) will be at the Rehearsal dinner.  We have so much dessert at the wedding it won't get eaten at all.  I saw a wedding last summer where she had an elaborate guitar cake made for the groom and it went to complete waste.

I've never heard of tears of joy, but I would expect anyone outside of me to be slobbering that day.  Seems kind of presumptuous to assume everyone will be crying at your wedding....  I should prob look at what they are before I judge tho....  CrySmile

I dont understand the wedding guest book where people sign their name. I've only seen those at funerals.

What are you supposed to do with the book afterwards....store it in the basement, never to be seen again?I don't get it.

I'm having a small grooms cake at the wedding because my FI is very involved in the wedding and I want something to surprise him.

  • I don't get the favors with bride and groom names or date either.  I'm doing wine charm favors, but they're more to use during the reception to tell which glass belongs to which guest, but I'm hoping that people will take them home and use them again since they will have the guest's name on them.

I don't get changing into another dress for the reception.  I'm not trashing mine, but I'm going to get every minute of wear out of it I can, including our post-reception party at a nightclub.

We're doing a groom's cake because it's a tradition, we LOVE chocolate and FI's mom is doing both of them and FI wants both (he swears up and down that he's not a big sweet eater, but he SO is!)

  • I HATE the mustache on a stick thing.  I think it is so stupid in and outside of photobooths. It makes no sense to me.  Also NWR but the crocheted hats that have a beard attached to them are the UGLIEST things I have ever seen.

Here is a pic in case you have never seen them.

  • I dont get the personalized favors either!  I hate the chicken dance, macerana, ymca, electric slide, etc.  We will be having NONE of those songs at the reception!  We are doing activity placemats for the kids for before/during dinner at the reception to give them something to do since there will be a lot of kids there and i dont want them running around like crazy.  We will also have a number of sitters there to keep an eye on them.  We could potentially have like 40 kids at the reception since ALL of our friends have multiple kiddos.

  • I'm getting really tired of the rustic/ vintage trend.. when none of it is really vintage at all. Everybody all the sudden pretends to have always been a vintage-y rustic style person. And I'm pretty sure that trend is where those annoying moustaches and lips came from..

Oh and mason jars! Why so many mason jars all the sudden?!? Ugh I know several annoying people who have ruined mason jars for me.

</div><div>That's my entire wedding. But...I have been into this style waaaaay before it was popular. Way before Shabby Chic was sold at Target. I'm 33 years old and this has been my style since I was in high school. My wedding basically looks like the inside of my house...rustic, romatic, and vintage. So, I guess lumping people together and saying no one is "truly" rustic and vintage is a bit harsh. </div>

<div>Yeah... same here, but I do get her point. I have been shopping in second hand stores for 'vintage' stuff for years, but now that you see it everywhere... oh I'm so going to sound like a snob... I guess I do find it a bit silly when people order mass-manufactured semi-old stuff. Or when they spend tons and tons on a shabby look. Or when they plan a year of fulltime work on planning a 'very simple affair'. And I do find it annoying that when I pick a style that I've loved so long will make me seem like I just am into following the latest fashion fads. Although my wedding will not be an all-vintage affair. Hm.</div>

That's exactly what I mean! I just can't stand watching people, claim to be doing something it's really not. If I know it's something you're really into or always liked.. awesome, I'm all for it! But I know certain people who wouldn't have been caught dead in/ with anything vintage 10 years ago but now pretend they've always been a rustic vintage soul. *rolls eyes* So Bookworm I'm not trying to lump people together, I guess I'm mostly complaining about people I've seen do this.
