What to do with my last name

Is anyone else having a really difficult time deciding what to do with thier last name?  I go between hyphenating it to changing it.  I don't know why this is such a tough decision but I need to figure this out

Re: What to do with my last name

  • I am 99% sure I will be changing my middle name to my maiden name. I figure I'd really sort it out after the wedding when i get time to go to the Social Security office, until then I'm not too worried. My mom changed her maiden name to her middle name to keep it easy with banking and Dr's charts and stuff.

  • I'm changing my last name. Replacing it with his :)

I'm old fashioned. I'm keeping my middle name because my first name is after my grandfather and my middle name is after my grandmother. I don't want to lose those. :)

  • I'm set on taking his name, and I'm set on keeping my maiden name.  The question has always been whether I keep my middle name, and thus have 2 middle names, or drop my middle name to replace it with my maiden.

I refuse to hyphenate.  It's a pain in the neck with paperwork.

  • I want to hyphenate but both our last names end in -ker so it just sounds weird....I thought about legally hyphenating but not using it for anything, but then whats the point.  UGH  this is the last decision to be made and i just can't.

  • I decided to keep mine and not take his at all, I am in my 30's, am published and have an established career. It is so much easier!

  • Haha, well I already have two middle names, so adding my longish maiden name as a middle name would probably be a bad idea.
If I didn't have a brother to sort of "carry on the family name," then I might consider keeping my maiden name or hyphenating. But my big bro can keep the line going, and I'm traditional, so I'm taking FI's last name.

  • Well, if it helps any of you feel better, the lady at the marriage license office told me you have 2 years to change your name after getting married, and one year to change your passport (last name) free of charge.  So, you can think about it in the months to come Tongue Out

  • Can't decide what I want to do. I don't want to change me middle name to my last name cause it's meaningful to me. I just can't decide what to do. lol

I think since I am most familiar/use daily my current last name rather than my current middle name, I will make my new middle name the old last name, and take FI's last name.  So drop the current middle name all together.

I was not for changing it when I first got married 10 years ago.  Thankfully that worked in my favor!

Now I'm a 36 year old professional who is well known in my field, and I cannot believe I'm actually changing it!  Seems to different this time.
  • I am changing my last name to his name and just dropping my maiden name.  The idea of replacing my middle name with my maiden name seems weird to me, as I am quite fouond of my middle name and use it as a nick name.
