Just found out OUR DJ HAS SHINGLES!

Well, my Mom and DJ have done some corresponding back and forth this week and she set up an appt for Sunday to give him our song list and to pay him off..They are friends on FB and she JUST read where he has shingles!  On Sunday, we are meeting at my Moms and I don't know now if my 3 yr old daughter should be here since she hasn't had chicken pox yet?! How contagious could he be? Is he contagious at all unless we touch him?! Im freaking out right now..I might just leave my daughter with FI and go to Moms and knowing her, she will be clorox wiping anything he has touched..her immune system is so down with going through kidney cancer this past year so Im super worried about her too!! WTH?

  • I looked this up online:

Similar to chickenpox, the time prior to healing or crusting of the blisters is the contagious stage of shingles. Once all of the blisters are crusted over, the virus can no longer be spread and shingles is no longer contagious.

    Is Shingles Contagious?
Shingles can be highly contagious, if an individual comes in contact with a person who has open blisters or sores. People who have never had chickenpox in their lives can be more prone to getting this from another individual. Sneezing will not cause another person to get the illness, only direct contact with another sufferer.

  • If I were you I would do my meeting over the phone. A woman in my office had it two winters ago and two co-workers got it. I would avoid going to his home. Anything DJ related could even be done in email.

  • Shingles is very contageous.  Like chicken pox, it is not spread through touch but is actually an airborne illness, so anyone int he same room as this man would be at risk.  I would be particularly concerned for young children that may not have been exposed to chicken pox before, and the eldery or any other guests who have a compromised immune system (ie if any of your guests are battling cancer)

  • You should definitely NOT expose your 3 yo to someone with shingles. As far as you interacting with him yourself you would probably be okay provided you wash hands, etc. after meeting with him.

The OP will only be "ok" if we are assuming she has had chicken pox previously or is vaccinated against it.  People of any age can get chicken pox and shingles so I would not assume that the OP will be "ok"

  • Yeah, I've had shingles, and I barely left the house for two weeks.  Do it over the phone, or via Skype.

  • As far as I know you can still get shingles even if you have had chicken pox. I wouldn't risk it. Finish up over the phone. That's all you need for your wedding.

I agree with this.  There's no point in risking anyone to exposure.  Talk on the phone and send a check in the mail.
  • Let me clarify - if you have had chicken pox of the vaccine, shingles is not at all contagious.  Shingles cannot give you shingles - it can only give you chicken pox.   So if you have not had chicken pox or the vaccine, or had it so long ago or have immunity issues (like cancer, chemotherapy, etc.) that you may no longer have immunity to it, stay away for at least 2 weeks.

Shingles comes from within your body if you've ever had chicken pox before.  Essentially the chicken pox virus lays dormant in your nerves, and when your immune system is very low (from old age, stress, illness, etc.), it can come out as shingles.  You can't 'catch it' from anyone.

Im a nervous wreck, My Mom had them like 40 years ago (she is now 49) and didnt have to have chemo or radiation but they took out most of her right kidney back in November for kidney cancer and my daughter has not had them yet (knock on wood) and FI has had them..I think I am going to see if Mom can just fax the song list to him and send him a check in the mail..I just hope he is better in 16 days!! • I had shingles when I was yonger, and i was pretty much stuck in my room for like 3 weeks. The doctor was really really adament that i didnt go out because if i were to spread it to an older person or a small child it could get bad..
I would confront him about it, and i wouldnt let him in my house..maybe you can do it over the phoen and email or skype.
oh and i had chickenpoxs when i was little too.

My mom just got a shingles vaccine and was told even if you have had the child pox as a child you can STILL get shingles as an adult. Skype and send the list via email and the check in the mail and make sure he's cool before the wedding.

  • Absolutely just talk over phone or skype, you dont want chicken pox or shingles running through the family right before you pretty much have the biggest reunion of your life. Also, does the dj know you guys know about the shingles? By all means you have a right to know if he can't do the wedding himself he should find a replacement. However still have a little compassion for the guy don't call him freaking out at him, its probably not his fault he has it I'll bet he is just as unhappy if not more unhappy about it than you. Personally I would send a feel better card with the check, but maybe thats just me. Just a friendly thought :

The ONLY way you can get shingles is if you had chicken pox as a kid.  Shingles is not caught, it's brought on from a dormant virus inside of you.  Shingles CAN however pass chicken pox on to those who have never had it.  Get it?  You can catch chicken pox, you cannot catch shingles.

Anyway, I'm sure in 14 days he'll be fine - usually the scabbing takes a week, and once it's scabbed up, it's totally not contagious anymore at all.  Even when it is contagious, it's not airborne - you have to touch some of the ooze

  • It would be a disaster if my 3 yr old would come down with chickenpox around wedding time..OMG..I shudder to even think that :(  I read on I think it was WebMD, during the blistering or pus filled state that the shingles are in, it can be spread by coughing or sneezing? Holy smoke! Just when I thought things were coming together, so far this week, it has been a ring dilema, a DJ with shingles, trying to figure out what to do with my 3 yr old the day of while we are getting ready...Hopefully next week will JUST be my fitting of my dress and getting off work early to get our marriage license Cry

  • Definitely do your meeting over skype or phone if possible.

Calindi is right, Shingles cannot be caught.  Shingles is a second occurence of the chickenpox, it lies dormant in your body.  However, a person who has not had chickenpox and comes into contact with someone who has Shingles runs a risk of catching the chickenpox.

  • My Mom wrote him yesterday on FB and he called her last night....He said he has been on antivirals this week and is even doing a wedding this weekend but he told her we will reschedule for one day next week..So depending on when I can get an appt with my seamstress for another fitting, we will be meeting him next week so Sunday meeting is cancelled! I think we will just go get our shoes that day instead..
