Hair and Makeup

Yeesh, it's expensive, at least in LA (and every other MUA does weddings on the side, and has a portofolio of movie makeup they've done for hollywood). I have a friend who is a MUA, and last year she said she'd do mine, so hopefully she still will. And I'm asking her for prices to offer my BMs, too. The usual price-range around LA seems to be between $100-120 for a BM's hair and makeup. Since three of them are still in school, and one is flying down for the wedding, I'm not sure if any will be able to afford it. And I don't think T will be willing for us to foot that bill. He's trying to convince me that $10 worth of chocolate is an excellent BM gift.

Has anybody else started looking into this? What are the prices like in your areas?

Just as high, if not higher in NJ :-( I decided to pay for them so I wouldn't have to ask them to pay so much.  If you put aside a little bit each paycheck it won't seem as daunting.  Or see if they want to pay.  Unfortunately, if you really want it done you can't force them to pay.

Oh, and do you have a mall where you can just go to a MAC counter or something?  Check out your favorite brand and see what the policy is.  They will take appointments and not charge you but make you buy maybe three products, so at least you take something with you.
  • GRRR!!! Why does TK keep eating my posts?!

What I wrote, in case it doesn't ever come back, is that I'm starting to look into hair and makeup, and it's soooo expensive. I have a friend who works as a MUA, and she said she'd do my hair and makeup, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the BMs. Her studio charges about $200 per BM for both hair and makeup. We can't pay for all of them, and I think most of them won't be able to afford it on their own.

I was wondering whether any of you have looked into it, and what your experiences have been.
  • I am planning on leaving that open to the BM's when i schedule my appointment i will ask if she will do my BM's and if they want to use her they can, or they can do it themselves. But i am getting a heck of a deal!

  • I am, of course, not going to try to force all of my BMs to pay $200 for hair and makeup. The problem is that I haven't been able to find another option to offert hem that's really in their price range (three of them are students). My makeup artist friend is actually super close w/ four of my five BMs, and would be willing to do it at a steep discount, but there are too many of us for her to do it all on her own.
  • I am having my sister and SIL do my hair and makeup, and I am leaving it up to my BMs if they want to do their hair and makeup at a salon or just do it themselves (my sister and SIL are 2 of my BMs, SIL can't do an updo with her hair, and my sister does really good updos)!

  • I am in the same position!  My wedding is about an hour outside of our city in a small town that doesn't have a salon.  Not really an issued because most MUA will travel to you, but the travel packages are all too large for me.  I will be the only one getting hair + makeup, and it's over $200 for them to travel out to my wedding, just do me, then head back into town.  I know I can't do hair and makeup myself, I want it to be different than my everyday look, you know?  I've looked on Craigslist to find amatures or people new to the business, and will keep looking there, I think it's my best bet.

    Good luck!
  • I'm in the midwest, so thinks are way less expensive here. We have a MUA coming to our house the day of the wedding. She is bringing one assistant to do me and my four bridesmaids. They charge $45-$55 for hair, and $55 for make up, but I think I am the only one getting professinal make-up. Also, I can't afford to pay for BM hair, so that will be their expense, and they are ok with that. (And, I did say they didn't have to get their hair done even though I really want it!)

One thing that people do around here that are trying to save money is contact beauty schools. There are 2 in my area, and girls that are practicing do it for $15 each here. I did this for a wedding a stood up in a few years ago, and my hair turned out great.
