August 2012 Weddings

Timing of when to do/get license and such

I wasn't sure where else to post this.  My question is first off when/where do we get our marriage license? I think my friend said you can't get it until the week of your wedding, but what is that process, and is that the only legal thing i'll need for the wedding?

Secondly,  When do I start the process of legally changing my name, and joining accounts, insurance etc.  I am not sure about this process at all or when it should happen (please say AFTER the wedding) lol just kidding :)

Advice/timeline appreciated

  • As far as the license, you have to check with the county/state you are getting married in.  Each state has different requirements etc.  I know for IN where we are getting married, we can begin an online app, then take that with us to the courthouse to finish/sign it.  It also expires in 60 days from the day you get it.
  • Marriage Licenses vary depending where you live.  I live in Los Angeles so here the license is good for 90 days after you apply for it.  The church where I am getting married recommended I not get it until 1 month before so it doesn't expire.

I think most people wait until after the wedding to change their names.  If your honeymoon tickets are under your maiden name, you shouldn't change it so your passport and other travel doscuments match.  Here's an article that might help.

<div>Yeah, this. We already started the online paperwork and after next weekend, we can go finish it in office (we'll be within the 60 day mark!!)</div>

  • Ditto PPs - it depends on the state where you live.  Here in Wisconsin, there is a seven day waiting period after you apply, but once you get the license, it is only valid for 30 days.  So we don't need to get ours until July or early August.
  • Like everyone said depends on where you are getting married.  In NH it expires 60 days after if I remember correctly so I think I will do that in July.  Also I think some states still require blood test.

Wait till after the wedding for name change.  Don't forget to change it with Social Security.  I use to work in financial aid and it was a nightmare because applications would deny because people would forget to change the name with social security.

  • In South Dakota the license expires 20 days after application, but there's no waiting period.  You could apply the morning of your wedding...although the cashier recommended at least the day before just in case the computer system is down...good ol' South Dakota!! : )
  • To add to what PPs said, I would ask in your local boards for license information.
