Nails?

Do any of you get fake nails regularly?  I'm going to get my nails done for the wedding and I've noticed that there are several different types of nail treatments you can have.  So, which type do you suggest?  How often do you have to have them filled?  Etc... I've never had my nails done, so I'm a bit oblivious.

TIA

Re: Nails?

  • Be had mine done from time to time. I've had acrylic done with French tips and filled every 23 weeks. For my wedding I'm trying to grow my own nails. I'm planning to just do schlack polish. Acrylic is harsh on your nails. I always have months or my nails being weak after I remove them.

  • My advice is to stay with natural nails and get shellac. It lasts up to 3 weeks.

When you get fake nails, they use a metal sander to grind off the top layer of your nail so the fake one sticks better. When you decide to have them taken off or grow them out, your nails look awful for weeks.

With shellac, it's normal nail polish, but a type of gel. You do have to go back to the salon to have it taken off, because you'll need their acetone remover to soak your nails in for 10 minutes.

I never get my nails done, and started getting shellac a few months ago, and it's great!
  • A loooong time ago I used to get my nails done pretty regularly. I was getting acrylics. They definitely change the the durability of your nails. But if you go without getting them done, they eventually go back to their normal strength. Usually you get them filled about every 2 weeks or so, depending on how fast your nails grow.

I'm unfamiliar with the shellac that PP mentioned, but it's been....maybe 10 years since I was getting my nails done, so maybe it's a newer alternative to acrylics? Heck, I might even look into it! I haven't thought about what to do for my nails for the wedding, so maybe I'll do that.
  • I hope you don't mind if I ask about it too. I've never gotten shellac nails either, but I was planning to for the wedding because I've heard good things. I'm planning to get a spray tan (i think its a mystic booth) done before the wedding too. Do I need to get nails done before or after the tan? Anyone have any experience with this??
  • I am getting an air brushed tan. The salon said do it after Mani/pedi so they don't scrub it off If your doing mystic I would do a trial run. I had streaks when I got it years ago. You use a towel and wipe off excess. It was easy to miss areas. I had unevenness under one arm.

  • I kinda think I'm going to go with acrylics because my nails are very brittle and I have trouble keeping them very long.  My nails do some odd things...like peeling o.O.  If my nails were thick and strong, I might try the gel stuff, but most of my nails are so short. :(  I hope they can do them so they look more natural.  The ones that are really pink look odd to me.
  • I'm personally getting Kiss false nails, french manicure style ($6 at walgreens) and putting them on myself (the glue on type). I've always done my nails this way for any event and always get TONS of compliments :D they stay on and look great for at least a solid week :D

  • My nails never quite make it either, so about 2 months ago I went at got pink and whites.  Ive been filling them every 2 weeks to get ready for the wedding..But once the wedding s over I'll have them removed.
