Opinions needed on color scheme...

Hi sounding board!  I love having you guys to bounce these things off of when FI gives me another "whatever you think is best" lol.

So I don't know if it's all the holiday gold or my recent stressing over bridesmaid gowns, but I'm thinking of tweaking my colors a bit.  The majority colors were going to be Ivory, Gold, and a darker Royal Blue, with peacock feather accents.  I finally found the right color blue for bridesmaid dresses but don't love the style options.  The BM dresses were going to be the only thing all blue.  Otherwise, it would just be an accent color with a little ribbon here, a little something else there.  I figured I'd never find the perfect blue for vests and ties to go with tuxes, so I was just going to have the guys wear gold.  Our table linens will be Ivory with gold overlays.

I like the idea of a splash of color with the blue BM dresses, but I'm wondering if it'll look more cohesive, and also just look cool, if I had them all wear a different gold dress.  Just have them all be cocktail to knee length and not strapless, and let them pick different dresses.  So then I'd basically be down to gold and ivory as our colors.  We do have a bunch of peacock accents, so that is a little touch of color.  How do you think that would look?

Re: Opinions needed on color scheme...

  • I like both visions, to be honest. My only question is would the gold dresses be metallic-y or more of a deep yellow color?
  • I also like both ideas, you can't go wrong!  I like the idea of the girls being able to pick their own dress, so that way they can choose a good fit and price range.  That's what I'm doing with mine; they are just buying a kneelength ivory dress.

How much do you love the shade of blue?  Does your love for the blue outweigh your dislike for the style of dress?  How do the girls feel about the styles of dresses?

I wouldn't worry about their not being enough color (if you go with gold dresses).  I think liitle accents are a gorgeous way to bring in pops of color!

  • I think gold dresses can look poorly on certain complexions.  I'd much rather wear a blue dress than a gold dress.

I really like the idea of the blue - it is a great highlight color with the gold and ivory to add depth to the scheme, and will look STUNNING with the mahogany paneling at your/our venue!!!  Stick with that - if you can't find a dress that is the exact right color, why not try a line like Alfred Angelo where you can pick a color and let the girls pick the dress? I like Mori Lee, too.

  • It would be more of a metallic gold.  I'd want some shine, like a satin or silk type material, if there were no embelishments on it making it sparkly.  I don't want it to look like it's just yellow.

I showed all the girls the original blue dress, and it's just my favorite color blue.  I don't really hate the dress style, it's just that it's kind of boring, and it doesn't make anyone look bad, but it's not really flattering either.  My girls are very easy going and have said they'd wear whatever I want.

The more I think of it, the more I like the idea of the gold dresses, but I'm just concerned with the lack of color.  And it's sort of a risk, so will all the different textures and styles go together...

  • Let us see that shade of blue and see if we can find anything close.

To be honest, as much as we obsess over specific shades, no one notices if they're "close" unless you literally try to match everything exactly, and then it looks 'matchy matchy' like a Davids Bridal wedding where the tuxes match the dresses match the flowers match the sash on the bride's dress match the... yeah, I prefer a bit more dimension!

  • @Calindi, those are the reasons blue would be great.  The only line (and I've looked at all the main lines plus more) that carries the right shade of blue is Barijay and I just am not loving any of the dresses they offer.

  • It's so hard to tell online... it's Barijay's european royal blue...  It's not that I care what everyone else thinks of the blue, b/c I don't think they'd notice... I just have a very specific idea of what shade I want to see.  There are lots that are close, but just not quite it.

I love the colors you are going with!  I personally think gold would be very hard for the bridesmaids to get matching dresses in, and what I consider is gold varies a lot (whether more matte and closer to yellow, or sparkly and glittery).  I think blue dresses would look GREAT with your colors.  I know some people do not like David's Bridal, but I loved their color plum and how cohesive they are with working with Men's Wearhouse.  I went today with my bridesmaids to get  dresses, and they all felt that David's had a lot of really flattering options.  I actually am in a wedding that has is using their Horizon color which is a really nice color, but they seem to have a lot of blue options.

  • I too dont think you can go wrong with either sheme. Btw I love the peacock feathers as a accent, too cute! Let us know what you decide!

  • so i'm going to be a bummer about this and just mention some things that you should at least think about before deciding.

Be VERY wary of gold metallic dresses.  Like PP said, gold does not go well with all complexions or hair colors.  to be honest, i'm quite pale with dark hair, and gold looks AWFUL (like, seriously nothing could look worse) on me.  Also, if the dresses have a lot of glitter, shimmer or shine to them, they may not look right in pictures.  The color may get washed out/altered, or the girls may look mishapen, depending on what flash is used, where the camera is positioned, etc.

Personally i think blue dresses with ivory or gold detailing (Sashes, or flowers) would work well.  Mori Lee has some great styles....just not sure if its the right blue for you!
