Cake whoas!-update

I got my final bill from my caterer today. I was blown away when the cake price was 325! He said if the cake was ordered through him that I would get a discount. I immediately called him and asked about the cake price. He told me he thought it was high and he would call the bakery. Im only getting cake for 80 people! I'm curious to know how much thers are paying for your cake?

  • Did u get just buttercream or fondant or anything special? I found out months ago by looking at different places, some charge 3.75 a slice for cake with fondant.  I got REALLY lucky and found a lady who did not charge that much be we do have a cake that will feed about 110 people, with fondant, and she charged $300.00.

  • mine is like the same as you. Im getting it through my venue but i had the option of getting it through the baker. It was actually more expensive through the venue. $6 a person, as a posed the $5 a personn through the bakery. But it was one less bill/deposit i had to pay

  • Yeah, that sounds about right.
Cake was the one thing I just couldn't spend the money on. We are doing a small cheesecake  for us just for the fact of "cutting pictures"  and then cookies and gourmet popcorn. I'm having a 200+ ppl wedding and It would have been well over $600.00 and that was with me shopping around for lower pricing.

We are getting 200 cupcakes plus a small 6 inch cake for FI and I to cut (plus rental of the cupcake stand, delivery, and set up) for just under $550.    To me your price sounds a little high for only 80 servings, but I suppose that it depends on your area.  It does work out to about $4 per serving, which for my area would be a bit high, but for other areas might be typical.  Let us know what you find out!

  • We paid $500 for our cake and that is for 300+ but it may have something to do with the area I am in.
  • We are paying $420 for our cupcakes and 6 in. cutting cake for 165 people.

  • Well it depends on what area you are in. I live in the Chicago suburbs and I found cakes from 2.5 a person to 5 a person, just depending on the town the bakery was in and their typical clientelle. The cheap ones tasted bad and didnt have good designs but the expensive ones were well expensive. I ended up getting a cake for 90 though for 60 people because a bakery that did not do wedding cakes referred us to a woman that does the cakes only for venues rather than person to person sales so we pretty much got wholesale price for an awesome cake. When you call up places ask for referrals because we found some other decent places that way just the wholesale lady was the best all around.
  • My wedding is 71 people total. We're eating the top layer that night to save money. 337.00. That was for three layer with butter cream.

  • That sounds about right! We are getting 150 mini cupcakes and a 6" cutting cake for $280. FI parents are doing a grooms cake and we will have a candy buffet as well.  There was NO way I was going to pay the quoted $5-$6 per guest for a piece of cake!
  • Ours is 4 tiers for 150 people with buttercream and it was just under 700. But I insisted that my cake come from a certain bakery. They do amazing work and their cake tastes just as good as it looks. So this is one of the things I splurged on.

  • We originally planned for a 150 guest wedding (down to just 90 now), and ordered a four layer cake. Buttercream, two layers chocolate with belgian cream, two layers vanilla with fresh raspberries. Cost us $400, but our baker's been really good about personalizing our cake and I doubt we would get the same quality for a lower price around here.

  • My cake is $355 for a 7 inch cutting tier, plus 40 regular cupcakes and 80 minis (we were expecting 80 guests, but at this point it looks like we're closer to 65)

That said, my cake has fondant work and gum paste flowers for the cupcakes.  If I went through a cupcake shop, the price would have been nearly $600 for the same thing.

Wow, sounds like a lot of varying prices depending on where you live. We have a 5 tier cake (with the middle layer being styrofoam due to the crystal decorations on that layer being very heavy and would sink into the cake) and then an additional 2 full sheet cakes and our total price was $650 for that. It's to serve 250 people. I think it depends on where you live definitely. We got our cake through Hy-vee which is a grocery store with a bakery inside of it, but they had amazing tasting cake and a great designer who rivaled some of the expensive bakeries around town.

Cake is so darn expensive! I have a friends Mom making it (she used to own a bakery) and is doing table cakes. She gave us an amazing price that I feel really good about since I don't like cake!

  • I went with the cheapest cake lady I could find and paid $218 for 125 servings plus the top small cake.  That includes delivery & set up.  I was going to make it myself originally, but found it too big of a hassle & decided a couple hundred was worth the peace of mind!
