August 2012 Weddings

Bridesmaid Dress won't fit

One of my bridesmaids, my close cousin, insisted on ordering a dress that I thought would be too small on her when she's at her fittest.  I tried nicely encouraging her to order at least a size up, and my mom offered to pay for her alterations, but she swore the size 6 would fit.  She couldn't get measured because she was very pregnant and said she had old measurements that would put her in a 6, and apparantly had no qualms about the baby weight being a factor.

Fast forward, the bridesmaid dresses arrived in the mail and I tried them all on.  I had only about 1/2-1 inch of give in her dress (it's one size larger than what I would have ordered myself), and she appears to have about 30-40 lbs on me right now, mostly midsection where the dress is snuggest.  There is NO way this dress is going to fit her.  And, even if she lost all the baby weight, I'm still skeptical because she just never was that small.

I am giving her the dress this weekend.  I will encourage her to try it on, but I anticipate she won't want to, and she is the type to hide that the dress doesn't fit and openly lie and say it does. I think she'll tell herself she will lose enough weight so it won't be a problem come August.  I know she will lose some weight, but I don't know that it will be enough.  And, as everyone knows, it takes forever to get a dress, so if she were to order a larger size, she'd have to do that by the end of May which is quickly approaching.  She is cheap (as I am too), so I feel like ordering a 2nd dress is not an option to her.

The advice from my mom is to let her figure it out and not have it as "my problem" since I have enough to worry about.  I just don't know what to say to her & I feel my big chance is this weekend when I hand her the dress.  Any thoughts?
