Honeymoon from the West Coast, any advice?

Wedding is August 25 (!!) and we have NO idea what to do for a honeymoon!  Something tropical, at least 10 days, and don't want to break the bank at all.  We are open to going in the winter to get out of the Portland, OR rain.  We will be in Hawaii for another wedding in July, so something other than that, and hopefully foreign.  I have been to Cabo, loved it, but the fiance (who hasn't been anywhere yet) thinks it sounds a bit spring breaky (I know it doesn't have to be that way).  Any advice on places in Mexico, Carribean, or cruises?  If I could afford Greece I'd be there in a second, but the flight alone is killer!  If anyone has found some great vacations (especially from the West Coast), websites, travel companies, let me know!  And let's hear peoples' honeymoon plans, it's been a while since we've posted about it :)

Re: Honeymoon from the West Coast, any advice?

  • Celebrity Cruises are my line of preference, and they have some great itineraries.

  • Hey there!  We are flying out of Portland too.  We actually live in Salem though.  We are staying at an all inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic.  Our priority was amazing beaches and AI.  The flight is pretty long but it looks absolutely gorgeous and worth it!  Not to mention, FI and I want kids so chances are it's not a place where we'd want to take a little one anytime soon!

Me too! Even on our state board anything outside of the PDX/Metro area is severely under represented, despite how slow the board is.

Have you given any thought to southern Latin America? I've had a family friend go to Panama and had a really good time.  How about SW Asia like the Philippines or Bali? Other than that I don't have any recs, We're staying at the coast.
  • Yay, some Oregon brides!  We were thinking of spending some time at the coast after the wedding, then taking a honeymoon in the winter (after we replenish some funds).  The Dominican Republic looks AMAZING.  I have looked at TripAdvisor, Costco travel, Expedia and Travelocity to try and weigh all the options, costs, and reviews, it's so overwhelming!  All inclusive sounds great, I know the FI would love that, it would be so convenient.  I've looked at Aruba too.  The long flights to both places are such a bummer, but would be worth it!  Puerto Vallarta isn't far at all, found some great 6 hours flights which makes Mexico pretty appealing :)

Where are you ladies getting married in this wonderful state?
  • I love seeing Oregon brides on this August board!  We are getting married at Willamette Valley Vineyards in Turner.  My FI and I could not be happier with it.  It had absolutely everything we could ask for in where we wanted to get married.  Ceremony outside overlooking the vineyard and then air conditioned reception inside with plenty of wine!  :)   What about you, where are you guys tying the knot??

We looked at a lot of places in the Caribbean and narrowed it down to somewhere there.  Aruba did look beautiful and I have heard they have gorgeous beaches.  (The beach was a big part for us.)  FI's parents are old fashioned so they told us they wanted to do the rehearsal dinner and our honeymoon.  There is no way we could have done DR without them.  They actually suggested it.  We are so grateful and were open to whatever they suggested.  I know a few people who have gone to AI in Mexico and absolutely loved it!  I think any place with sun and beaches is a huge step up from this rain and cold air in Oregon!!!   :)

  • Oh, I love Willamette Vineyards, that is beautiful!  We seriously considered Zenith too, I imagined my wedding being at a vineyard.  We somehow wound up checking out Mt. Hood Ski Bowl and fell in love with it.  Definitely never something we had thought of, but it just fell into place.  Only thing is that it's about an hour outside of Portland and I hope people get hotel rooms and not drive back at night after the reception.  I was hoping to no have that added expense for guests, but I know it will work out.
  • You are going to have an amazing view at Mt. Hood!  Wow, that's going to be beautiful.  Don't you love how things fall into place?  If I were a guest up at a wedding there, I would definitely take advantage of it and get a room!  The good news is since you planned it out, you are giving your guests plenty of notice to do that and plan on staying there!

  • My sister loved Jamaica!!  Also my brother and SIL recommend the Blue Moon Palace in Cancun!! :)  We decided not to go outside the US because of needing to get passports and as my FI put it "I'm in a country where I don't know their laws".

  • Currently we seem to be leaning toward Puerto Vallarta!  We found some reasonable flights that are only 6-7 hours long and I've heard great things about it.  Any recommendations on an all-inclusive resort, or a vacation rental?  I'd love to get out of the resort and look around too.  It's hard to research a place you know absolutely nothing about, and weight all of the reviews versus budget!  If I could plan everything in my life based on recommendations I would be a happy camper!
  • Costa Rica!!!  It's amazing.
