August 2012 Weddings

I'm knot....

- taking engagement photos. (We don't even have a photographer yet...)
- having the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen.
- having my BMs wear one dress or one color or my MOHs stand out (I have two).
- wearing a garter. (There is no freakin' way I am having my FI go up my dress in front of our friends, family, and coworkers.)

What are you knot doing? ChristineNB mentioned they did not send STDs and it made me curious what you all are skipping.

Some of the above are things I'm sensitive about, but only because I think people have specific expectations, but how the heck can I meet all of those??? ;)

Going on a big honeymoon....I just graduated and my fiance will be in his second to last semester...we are poor :)

Doing assigned seating- I honestly don't get that at a wedding nor see a point of forcing people to sit somewhere

Having a flower girl or ring bearer

I'm sure there are more, but these are the biggest ones.

    a church wedding
a large wedding party, BM and MOH only

  • You know it really helps to know there are other people out there who don't buy into all the wedding crap.  Sometimes I feel a lot of pressure to put on a show rather than celebrate a marriage!  This post was definitely what I needed to remind me what the day is about :)

  • TK was being annoying last night and I didn't get to read all of these until this morning.

I agree with you KSParker, it is really nice to hear from all of these ladies on  a wedding board not doing all the things the wedding industry pushes. I feel better already.

I think I counted 9 people that aren't doing a garter toss. I'm mostly fine with a bouquet toss, but someone pointed out how awkward they feel participating as a "single" lady and I feel I could totally see that... Though I've always loved participating, that ship has sailed though (well in 135 days)... ha.

  • I'm knot:
    -Getting married in a church
-Having any type of unity candle
    -Having matching bridesmaids
-Having the men in tuxes (khaki suits)
-Using a florist (fake from Michaels that I'm arranging)
-Hiring a cake baker (making my own)
    -Hiring a DJ (computer music)
-Buying a wedding gown (white bridesmaid dress)
-Serving the typical meat & veggies meal (lasagna)
-Having a flower girl or ring bearer
-Having an elaborate Rehearsal Dinner (pizza, thank you)
    -Having a limo
    -Staying in a hotel
-Buying invites (designed my own to print)
-Buying toasting glasses, cake set, guestbook & pen, etc
-Inviting everyone that our families want there (small is turning out to be 100)

I am so happy that others see the wedding industry for what it is and aren't buying into it all.  And whomever said "wedding circus" above is SPOT ON!  I feel that's what everyone else wants!!

    I'm knot doing the following:

guys are wearing charcoal suits, not tuxes
having favors (we decided to take the extra money and have a martini louge)
walking to the traditional bridal march
    having a flower girl
getting married on Saturday (Friday evening)
the usual guestbook (we are doing madlibs)
    Bridesmaids are wearing different dresses

haha That is what I have to keep telling myself...
  • edited March 2012
I love reading these... especially after having arguments with older generations about how "everybody will expect _____, because every wedding does that." If only I could convince these same people to actually go on a wedding website so they can see that there is no 'norm' anymore!

    I'm knot:

    • having a bridal party dance
    • getting married in a church
    • having an all female BM party (my male STARIGHT friend is one of my BM's)
    • doing the bouquet or garter toss
    • walking down the aisle to the bridal march (train- marry me, instrumental's only)
    • having only 1 ring bearer (two brothers... didn't wanna choose, so why should I?!)
    • sending save the dates
    • having fancy transportation
    • serving traditional wedding food (BBQ style for this gal)
    • limiting the entertainement to the dance floor - hello 18 hole mini golf, horeshoes, bocce ball, & badminton (this was the main reason we picked this venue- guests like myself who don't dance tend to leave weddings early out of boredom/feeling uncomfortable sitting at the table alone well everybody else is dancing)
    • having the dj play the chicken dance, ymca, electric slide etc.
    • staying in a hotel the night of
    • having traditional bachelor/bachelorette parties (joint party...more fun and cheaper on the MOH & BM who happen to be engaged and share money)
    • having the same # of BM & GM
    • taking engagement photos

and with that said, I'm sure we will all enjoy our weddings a lot more than the brides who included things they didnt want to include just because they felt they "had to" Wink

    Awesome!
  • I'm knot....

Having a ring bearer or flower girl.
    Hiring a DOC
    Having favors at the reception
    Having a fancy rehearsal dinner
    Doing any group dances
Wearing heels or any dress shoes....silver sandals instead.
Doing any unity candle/sand ceremony stuff.

  • This is fabulous!!  I am also KNOT having a choreographed wedding!  There will be no garter/bouquet to toss . . no church but rather a garden, no wedding party, just MOH and BM who mean the word to us and will stand by us as always through thick and thin . . there will be NO chicken dance/electroslide/hokey-pokey! No limos, no formal photos just candids, no assigned seats, no gift registry, no showers, no tuxes (just a new suit!) no towering cake (cannoli's & eclairs!) no elaborate centerpiece's (simple homemade elegance) no color scheme or theme just plenty of beautiful colors, and NO STRESS!!  There will be lots of love and joy, good food, music, dancing, happy faces, a bit of wine and great memories to cherish!

  • I'm Knot:
    - hiring a florist (buying from a craft store, and assembling myself with help from a cousin)
    - hiring a cake baker (my aunt is making mine)
    - having a traditional officiant (my brother is officiating our wedding)
    - having my bridesmaids completely match (hair/makeup and shoes are totally up to them)
    - doing a wedding party dance (first dance, father/daughter/ and maybe mother/son only)
    - having a fancy rehearsal dinner (eating at a family favorite mexican restaurant)
    - having traditional wedding food (picnic style: buns with shredded pork/turkey, coleslaw, chips, fruit salad, etc. and a meat/cheese tray with crackers and cheeseball later in the evening)
    - having a traditional bachelorette party (bring a bottle of wine and maybe a few Smirnoff Ices or Mike's Hard Lemonades, go to the hotel room with my close girlfriends and sister/SIL and just relax the night before).
    - having a limo
    - hiring a DOC, I trust my family to help out and keep things running smoothly (they have in the past)
    - doing a unity candle ceremony (we are using unity sand in our wedding colors)
    - using only 2 unity sand colors (we are having my brother pour white to represent our pasts, and then using the red and black to represent us)
    - having a "traditional" honeymoon (Orlando, Florida!! Universal Studios, Aquatica, Discovery Cove, lots of fun and maybe a day trip to the beach)
    - having our honeymoon right after the wedding (waiting until October we think)
    - doing assigned seating at the reception (it is a picnic style buffet, and people can sit where they want, with the exception of the head table)

    I for one AM:
    - doing a bouquet/garter toss (I have always loved taking part, and my garter will be sneakily moved down to my calf/ankle before my FI takes it off)
    - doing a dollar dance (sometimes it is the only way to get one on one time with the bride/groom)
    - doing the group dances (chicken dance, hokey pokey, electric slide, cha cha slide), probably not the macarena, but my family LOVES to dance so I know there will be lots of us shaking it on the dance floor!!!  So jjlolovich you are not alone!!! :)

  • I'm knot:
Having a flower girl or ring bearer( which only happened because no one has any kids of the right age, I was so sad because I always think they are the cutest part of the wedding but no big deal)
Having a cake baker- Fiance's cousin is gifted in this area
Having traditional dances- my fiance and two of our really close male friends are having their own designated dance! haha
Having a normal guest book- it's a scrapbook that i'm making that people will leave notes in.
Sit down dinner or buffett- because of the time we are just having snacky finger foods!
normal toast- everyone will be allowed to saysome words if they wish
identical bridesmaids- the all have the same dress but everything else is of their choosing. although I guess i told them to have silver shoes so... other than that haha
hmmmm... can't think of anymore. :-D

    - Renting a limo (ceremony and reception at same venue)
    - Have a flower girl or ring bearer
    - Having a fancy cake (cupcakes instead)
    - Doing favors (we will have a photobooth that comes free with our photographer)

saraschilling88 and jjolovich, I'm with you!  We are definitely doing a garter and bouquet toss, dollar dances, and some of the goofy group dances too!  Our friends and family would be disappointed if we didn't.

  • I’m knot…

    ·         Doing STD’s

    ·         Sweetheart table

    ·         Going on a big honeymoon – Full time student as well

    ·         Waiting a while before going on the honeymoon – may take a few days up to the Dell’s but otherwise it’ll be later in the year for our “honeymoon”

    ·         Having Polka music played at my wedding

    ·         Not walking down the aisle to traditional wedding music (It’s a toss up between Phantom of the Opera – Music of the Night or Colbie Callet I do)

    ·         Getting married in a Church ( I live by beautiful Lake Michigan – going to take advantage of that)

    Although I am doing

    ·         Bouquet/Garter toss – our venue has an awesome upper look out for us to do it on

    ·         The fun choreographed dances – cha cha slide, cotton eye joe etc.

    ·         Dollar dance – For the weddings I’ve been to on my dad’s side, they have done the dollar dance. Plus like someone said – great chance to get some time with the bride/groom.
