has anyone tried/seen this?

my FSIL, God love her, has decided that she is going to make a "hula hoop chandelier" (paint a hula hoop, tie icecycle lights around it) for the rehearsal dinner, which we've rented the main pavilion at the local park for.  I really don't like the idea, doesn't sound at all like what I've envisioned for the dinner, but she feels that it's the groom's family's responsibility to host, and I have no real say so.  I am getting so frustrated.  Has anyone seen or done this (she got the idea from pintrest)????

Re: has anyone tried/seen this?

  • I googled it and found a few images, I don't think it will look bad if it's done right.
What dont you like about it/?
  • I have seen it done beautifully in photos, but I haven't seen it used anywhere.  I think it will work nicely with the venue.  Perhaps if it's not what you had imagined, there won't be a convenient place to plug the lights in?  Not everyone remembers an extension cord!
I do like that she wants to add something special to your dinner, but I hope she didn't come right out and tell you that you have no real say on the decor.
  • We wanted a casual, relaxed rehearsal dinner, which is why we went with grilling steaks and at the park.  Anything "chandelier" just doesn't seem to fit the BBQ style dinner we were aiming for I guess.  Also, our dinner is at 5pm...it's daylight until at least 9....so the effect of the lights will be totally lost I'm afraid.  But yes, she flat out told me I had no say so.  She said I will get to see all of her ideas at the rehearsal.

I tried to tone her down by reminding her that day was going to be very busy and she wasn't going to have a lot of time to decorate the park.  She said she would find the time. <sigh />
  • I've seen it on pinterest, It could look really nice... I thought about adding them to my venue, but I had already purchased another DIY project to hang... but I think if she does it right it will look really nice... but yes, remember the extention cord!!!

  • i guess my big 'concern' is that we're going to be outside, during the day....so i don't think she'll get the look she wants....but thank you all ladies, knowing that it looks good helps ease my mind
