Scariest night of my entire life

Last night I went to bed around midnight or so and my FI was up playing a game on his phone since our TV was being wonky and around 1:40 I was woken up out of a dead sleep to him in the bathroom literally gasping for air with water all over the floor and towels strewn all over the floor in a panic coughing and trying to vomit at the same time. He has been complaining of a sore throat but nothing too serious so we didn't take it too serious. I start to panic and go to call 911 and realize I can drive faster than waiting on an ambulance since we're literally down the street from the hospital.

I throw him in the car, speed like it's nobody's business, and I swear God must have been looking out for us because we hit no traffic and no lights and got there in literally 3 or 4 minutes. Get him in the ER and the lady won't help him because he is panicking over not being able to breathe and can't tell her his name or social and finally gets checked in and they make him wait in the waiting room for what seems like forever. They get him back, do a strep test, take x-rays, give him medicine, a steroid, breathing treatment, and a numbing agent with no real answers as to what happened and send us on our way after 3 long hours.

So yea needless to say I didn't get much sleep and spent most of my time watching him to make sure he was breathing and now I am playing mother hen and watching what he eats, making sure he sleeps elavated, takes medicine as directed and just hoping and praying it doesn't happen again. I have never experienced anything like that and never hope to again :( I get anxiety just thinking about it, I thought for a second there we might be in really big trouble

  • Oh wow, that sounds scary, so sorry you and FI had to go through that. Hope everything turns out okay; do you go back for a follow-up or get referred to a specialist or anything?? Hope you have better sleep soon!

  • I hope he is feeling better and it wasn't caused by anything serious. It is so frustrating when they can't tell you why it happened. I would definitly folow up with another doctor to make sure this was a one time thing and there is nothing else going on.

  • They told us to follow up with his doctor in a couple days and if it doesn't go away than to come back in. They described it as a viral infection that can't be fought with antibiotics but they aren't even 100% on that. I think they wanted to diagnose him with something rather than saying "we got nothing" and us leaving empty handed.
  • It is true that antibiotics don't work on viral infections. If it is a virus it will just have to run its course. I know how hard that is, my daughter is in daycare so she gets sick all the time and it is usually a virus, I feel so bad when all I can do is give her motrin for the fever but not actually make her feel better. I can say that whenever I bring her in and the doctor says her symptoms look viral, I really don't know what they are going on, but they have been right every time and she always feels better in a couple days.

  • Sorry to hear about that & hopefully it is just a viral infection which will pass quickly.  I'll add a lighthearted similar story that will hopefully put a smile on your face:

Although at the time this was not funny, now it is a bit funny.  I spent the night at FI's apt after not feeling well and eating little.  In the morning I was feeling woozy and all the sudden I felt like I might vomit, and a bit weak, so I went and sat on the bathroom floor with my head down on the tub.  All the sudden my insides rumbled and I got up to sit on the toilet, but the movement combined with my weakness caused me to pass out while on the toilet where I proceeded to fall off the toilet forward onto my head (I know because there was a sore spot).  Luckily, since I was so out of it, I hadn't shut the door and I was lying in the bathroom into the hallway.  Had the door been shut, I would have been blocking his way in.  Ugh... I eventually came to with my pants around my ankles and him over me.  It took about 10-15 minutes before I felt like moving.  I took a shower and went back to bed for hours.  I never went to the doctor, but whatever virus I had knocked me down hard!

  • OMG! I am so glad you were able to get him to the hospital in time!!  I hope your FI feels better and that this was a one time thing.

Your doctors were right, viruses can't be treated with antibiotics, and if they would've prescribed you antibiotics your FI could have just developed a resistance to the antibiotics.  That action (over prescribing antibiotics) is what has caused the "superbugs" like MRSA to spring up..

Hope you both are able to get some rest tonight, and that no more scary nights happen anytime soon! *hugs*

  • This sounds terrible!  I hope he is doing better.
Can't imagine how scary it was... Keep us updated!
  • So far so good. He says he feels better and it's moving up to his nose and affecting his sinuses now :/. Poor guy can't catch a break. He is refusing to sleep elavated because it hurts his back but we will see who wins that war because I would rather him be sore than dead.

I am really turning into a worrywart over this. I have never experienced anything like this so I was extremely panicked at the time and still get anxiety thinking about it.

Rungirl12: At the time I can see that not being funny but now I can see the humor lol. Once we got home and some sleep, he told me he didn't want to call 911 because he was afraid they would cut a hole in his throat to put a tube in and he is terrified of that. Sometimes they don't think things all the way through but we still love them haha
