meals for children

Helping a friend with her wedding...there will be at least 12 kids at the recepetion and we were wondering if anyone ever gets special meals for children.  Seems a bit much to order a big 4 course meal for a young child.
Any thoughts?

Re: meals for children

  • It's pretty common to offer a children's meal but you don't have to!

  • Ask the venue about childrens meals, which is generally something more to their liking such as chicken fingers, etc.
  • We offered a children's meal as the option was available through our venue but we didn't stipulate that anyone twelve and under had to get that.  We had some older kids (13-14 year olds) opt for chicken fingers and a couple of under 12s order the (adult) pasta.  Talk to your venue to get the best info.

  • Ditto PP that you need to ask your venue. Our venue offered a more kid friendly option at a fraction of the cost of an adult meal.
  • I think it would depend on what you are having for your olders guests.  Most children won't really enjoy the food that the adults have so I would take that into consideration.  Talk to your caterer about what kind of kids meals they provide and usually it will be cheaper than the adult meal.  You are right about a kid not needing a four course meal.  The children at our wedding will be having chicken tenders, macaroni and cheese and a couple other sides but that is it.
  • Definitely ask your venue/caterer!  Our meal cost $80/pp.  There was no way I was paying that for the little ones attending, especially since they wouldn't eat 1/10'th of the food!   We had a chicken finger and fries option for the kids at a waaay reduced rate.  We let the older children decide which meal they wanted on the day.   (our reception was at a restaurant so all the guests could decide that day which entree they wanted to order)

  • I asked the caterer about a kid's menu, and he didn't offer much. I kind of figured that he wouldn't offer much. Most caterers, I feel, seem offended to hear a "kids menu." I actually asked our venue if I could just buy the food for the children who would be attending (25), and they said that was fine (we're doing a buffet style dinner, so it will just be added into the food from the caterer).  I'm just going with chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, and corn on the cob.
  • We offered cheese pizza for the kids.
  • All I know of ours is that kids are half price but then I feel like our menu (pasta bar buffet) is pretty kid-friendly to begin with. If we were doing a plated meal, I would definitely ask my caterer for kid specific menu items.
