To Cake or Not To Cake...that is the question

So far, my wedding is pretty non-traditional and I am thinking of not having a cake. In Western PA the cookie table seems to be the focus more so than the wedding cake. Would it be wise to have a small cake for us to cut (mainly for the photo op) and have an elalborate cookie table? The last wedding I was in, I noticed the guests were leaving with small containers of cookies, but left their cake uneaten on the table. What should we do? Thanks!

First of all it depends on your guests and what they are used to. If the cookie table is more predominant where you will be getting married and the cake generally goes to waste, don't spend money on a cake that won't get eaten just to have something for pictures. Skip the cake entirely and have the photographer capture you feeding each other cookies. That fits with the cookie theme and is also non-traditional while not wasting money and food.

First of all, it should be a clue for you NOT to use the same baker as they did...  Good cake gets eaten!  If you invest a little time into selecting a delicious tasting cake people WILL eat it!  If you had some of the cake and it was delish, then the problem was when they bride & groom served it.  Serve it right away with dinner, not an hour or two later in the evening.  You don't HAVE to have a cake, OTOH, you don't want to look back and wonder "should we have had a cake" because of missing out on the photos.  It's your call, but it sounds like given what you've mentioned that at the minimum it's worth getting a cake to take some pics with, and it doesn't have to be large, fancy, nor expensive.
