Walmart Cake?

I'm having trouble finding a baker for my cake. Someone recommended getting a cake at WalMart. I don't want a cake that tastes overly sugary and store-bought but am not sure if this would be the case if I got one there. Anyone been to a wedding with a cake for Walmart or got a cake from Walmart for their own? Would you recommend it?

Walmart makes some really good cake.  You can buy slices of it in the bakery to try if you want.

If you live in an area that has a Publix Supermarket they also make very good cakes.

Would walmart do a design like white with red and black? Our colors are black, red, and silver.

The Wal-Mart decorators stick to the styles in the books because most of the time- their decorating skills are actually quite limited. Sorry. Just make sure you see actual photos of cakes that decorator has done. What you pick out of their book may not be what your cake ends up looking like!

Some things to consider about most big box wedding cakes... 1) Most big box stores DO NOT deliver!!!  If someone drops your cake in the process of pickup, delivery, or setup, you're SOL compared to a baker who is still responsible for it if something happens when they're doing the delivery.  Setting up a wedding cake is NOT as easy as it looks on TV..  2) The portion size that most big box stores use is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than what a baker and even your cutter is going to use.  Their slice portion from the book is 1x1x3, most bakers use at minimum 1x2x4-6.  That's a big difference!!  3) Your cake choices are limited to a 3-ring binder and you have to purchase your own "cake kit" and stand for the cake which can get expensive in a hurry.  4) It's all dependent upon your local store and the decorating ability of the individual baker who has less than 20 minutes to decorate your ENTIRE cake.  If you've got a store with a less than stellar food manager the cake can taste like freezer burn from the number of times frozen/thawed/refrozen/rethawed/decorated/refrozen/etc...  Most of all, like a PP pointed out, make sure that you ask to see photos of REAL cakes they've done at your particular store!!!  A store with a good decorator is going to show compared to a store without such a great decorator.  For more information check out the cakewrecks blog...
