Cake flavors

Hi ladies-- My name is Jaimie, I'm a June 2010 NY bride. I was wondering, what fillings are you ladies doing for your cake? We just a tasting with the bakery and we weren't impressed so I wanted to get some ideas and try again. TIA!!Jaimie

Fillings depend on what goes best with the cake it's served with. If you didn't like the tasting at one bakery, schedule tastings at other bakeries until you find something you love. Never book a bakery without getting a tasting first and making sure that you absolutely love what they have, and also don't assume that a second go-round with a single bakery will have better results since they should have been good the first time around if they were worth their salt. Some bakers are very limited in their cake and filling selections while others have extensive lists. If you do a Google search for cake and filling flavors, the options are literally endless but the bakers in your area may or may not be willing to make those. In which case, you need to ask on your local board what the good bakers in your area offer and schedule tastings at each. Fillings can be any flavor. They typically include jams, mousses, cream cheese, buttercream, cannoli, fresh fruit, just to name a few.

We aren't having any fillings, my mom is a cake decorator and her cake is to die for all on it's own.  She does do fillings, but we chose to just enjoy her cake and ICING!  (her buttercream is out of this world, I could just eat a bowl of it, I wouldn't fit in my wedding dresss anymore, but it would taste oh-so-good).  But our cake flavors are white, chocolate, white almond poppyseed, orange cream, lemon chiffon, spice, cherry and maybe strawberry.

My fiance and I went with a single crowd pleaser - yellow cake with chocolate frosting.  We originally ordered other flavors, but our venue wouldn't serve cake to guests at the table if there were different flavors.  So, we changed to one flavor and we're really excited about it! We think it will be a huge hit!

We have a different flavor for each of the 4 tiers of our cake.  The first one is white cake with a chocolate mousse filling, then chocolate cake with strawberry filling, then marble with amaretto mousse, and then White with chocolate mousse for the top tier... We figured in a year we will both still like that flavour. Oh and the entire thing will be iced with alternating white buttercream frosting and chocolate frosting, no fondant.

we are having three tiers.  we have the same type of cake for each tier, but the fillings are different.  it's going to be a butter cake with chocolate pudding on one layer, cream cheese with pecans on the second layer, and lemon on the top layer.

We're having a 2-tiered cake, bottom tier vanilla chiffon cake with chocolate mousse filling (which will be infused with amaretto) and the top tier will be spice cake with german chocolate filling (the coconut custard w/pecans) and the whole cake will be frosted with buttercream. Good luck cake shopping!

Hey Jaimie! We have a 4 tier sandcastle cake, the pillars in the corners are going to be plain almond cake. The bottom level is almond cake with raspberry creme filling.Next is a chocolate hazelnut cake with chocolate truffle filling made with Baily's. Then a strawberry cake with strawberry fruit filling. And the "anniversary cake" is chocolate cake with raspberry creme filling. (we really liked the raspberry cream!)The whole cake will be iced with whipped frosting and dyed the color of sand, with brown sugar around it to look like wet sand and potentially white chocolate shells and  starfish.

I ate a wonderful dessert at a restaurant.  I called the pastry chef there and she has recreated the dessert into a wedding cake flavor.  It is italian cherry brandy cake with pistachio pastry cream with buttercream frosting.  It is awesome!

We are having a vanilla cake with buttercream icing and raspberry filling! I love the idea of having a filling because it's something a little different.

Hey ladies!! Lasairiona—The only problem with what you suggested is that the cake is included in my package at the venue so I have to use this bakery. Budget is tight so I can’t switch, but I totally understand what you are saying. This bakery comes recommended and is usually good which is why we were disappointed.   Everyone else-- Thank you for the responses! It’s been very helpful so I get some different ideas so I can try again. I like how a lot of you are doing something different whereas my tasting it was like chocolate mousse, strawberry and banana, barvarian, exc. They are apparently the most popular fillings. But again, thank you!

Alternating layers of almond cake and chocolate almond cake, praline buttercream filling, covered in chocolate ganache. It was delicious.

Our cake will be four tiers, each tier a different flavor. It will be iced in buttercream. No fondant here, either, it tastes gross and makes the pieces look messy! Top tier: Chocolate orange (Dark chocolate cake, drizzled with a Grand Marnier syrup, layered with an orange-dark chocolate mousse, enriched with candied orange bits) Second tier: Citron (White satin cake is topped with a layer of traditional, English-style lemon curd, homemade with fresh eggs, sweet cream butter, and lemon zest, and then filled with an airy lemon mousse) Third tier: Bananas foster (Moist, light, fresh banana cake topped with smooth caramel and a dark rum-caramel mousse) Bottom tier: Seattle special (Custom flavor... chocolate cake with chocolate bits baked in, topped with a layer of chocolate ganache, filled with coffee-infused white chocolate mousse with toffee pieces) You would not even believe how good her cakes are! :)
