How Much Cake?

I'm in the process of ordering my cake for my wedding next month. What I ordered came out to be more than I budgeted for. I would like for people to be able to have more than the 'serving' size of wedding cake. My fiance's family is very southern and would see it as stingy not to have an actual slice of cake. We are expecting about 80 guests, and I ordered enough to feed 200. My fiance' and I would like to keep the top tier for our anniversary. But that would mean going over my budget by $200. Should I order less or just bite the bullet and pay for it?

Really?  We had 200 people, and we ordered enough cake for 200 people, and we still had an entire layer left over.  I think ordering a cake to feed 200 people when you are only expecting 80 guests is too much.

Did you order enough tables for 200 people, food, table centers, alcohol, party favors...  Doesn't make sense to order cake for 200 either.

Even serving larger slices, I agree with PPs that it sounds like you over-ordered. Not every guest is going to want a massive slice of cake, and some may forgo dessert altogether. If you want to be sure to have a bit extra, I really think ordering cake to feed 100 (when you are expecting 80) would be more than sufficient.

200 seems like way to much.  150 will probably be more than enough.

I agree with PPs. 200 is way too much. You'd be surprised how many people don't eat dessert. And a standard "serving" of wedding cake should be enough...I definitely have never felt like I didn't get enough with the standard size, and I LOVE cake.

I'm also having more cake then people but we're having about 200 people and I'm having enough for 300. I would say order enough for half the people to have 2 peices so go with 125-150... for sure I think 200 is a little too much.

If you are only expecting 80 guests and ordered enough cake for 200 servings I think you will have more than enough for your guests to have thier fill and still be able to keep the top tier for your anniversary. Make sure that whoever is cutting the cake starts by cutting the bottom (largest) tier first (remove other tiers before cutting). If the caterer is cutting the cake they should know this. That way you'll have the smallest top tier left and not a huge chunk of the bottom tier.
