Different Cake Idea - Opinions?

I found this cake in a Martha Stewart Weddings article on how to make your own wedding cake. I have no intention of making my own wedding cake, but I really like the idea, especially because we're doing rock candy as favors and are probably doing crystals on candles for centerpieces.
What do you think?

This is really pretty!  Until I clicked on the picture, it looked like a lace pattern, so I didn't know how the rock candy tied in.  Be careful with the flavors that you use so they don't interfere with the rock candy.  Maybe, when you do your cake testing, take some rock candy in the color/flavor you want so that you can get the true taste!

It's definitely neat, and different, but I hate rock candy, so it would really take away from the cake for me.

However, if you know you have a guest list that loves rock candy - it'd be great.  I wonder if you could do alternating tiers with that and some kind of buttercream piping on the others to have the best of both worlds?

I think that looks very cool. If there are a few people who are picky about it, they can just scrape off the candy.
