fondant diy.. yes or no?

So I am going to make my own cake...has anyone worked with fondant...is ot as easy as it looks? Does it have a flavor?

Re: fondant diy.. yes or no?

  • Fondant tastes like ass.  You're not really supposed to eat it.  I've heard marshmallow fondant is a little better, but still not all that palatable.

Why don't you get some fondant and try it out?  Then you can see if this is really something you want to be doing right before your wedding.

  • I have it on good authority that marshmallow fondant is insanely easy to do and tastes pretty good.  It's cheap enough ingredients that it's worth doing a trial run.
  • Boxed fondant from a cake supply store or craft store tastes kind of like the box it comes in.  Marshmallow fondant tastes a bit better because you at least know what goes into it.  I would definitely practice making the fondant and working with it before you definitely decide using it for your wedding cake.

And just FYI, a nicely frosted buttercream cake can be really pretty as well and a lot easier to deal with.

This. I skipped fondant because it tastes horrible and buttercream is SO much cheaper. Also if you plan to make your own, fondant can be hard to get the hang of (though not impossible).
  • Fondant is edible, it just doesn't taste good.  The trick with fondant is getting it really thin, but not tearing.  Theoretically, you should be able to get it this thin using a rolling pin, but everyone I know has had trouble with it.  Most professionals use a machine similar to a pasta machine to get it super thin.  I've been noticing cakes decorated with a variety of frostings lately, and they look really pretty with swirls, etc. of frosting.
  • If you want good tasting fondant check out fondarific. It tastes like buttercream. And they have other flavors. Ands its a bit easier to use than the wilton. It stretches pretty far. You should try a small cake ahead of time though. You can get the same fondant at Michels. its The Chef Duff kind. It really does taste good. The other stuff is pretty gross. The good thing about making your own cake is it you can do it a few days before and store it at room temperature if you use fondant.

Some brands of fondant taste absolutely vile (Wilton comes to mind). Unless you are very experienced with working with fondat, I would advise against it. I made my own cake, including the fondant, and it was the single biggest stressor in the entire wedding planning process.

The main reason fondant cakes are so much pricier is that fondant is a pain in the ass to work with, especially if you don't have access to a professional sheeter.
  • unless you make lots of cakes, or have the oportunity to before the wedding then I say no dont use fondant. I make cakes all the time, and fondant is not as easy as it looks. It does take practice. Also a word of advise, if you do still plan on going the make you own cake route make sure you have no other plans the days leading up to the wedding, as wedding cakes take up alot of time (fondant or no fondant) and can be quite stressful to newbies, so trying to juggle a cake and any other tasks you have left may be too much to handle.
