Ask your baker to make a small 4 serving cake with fondant & one with butter cream & do a taste test.

It all depends on the baker you have. We had a very talented one who made delicious fondant. You should try some samples before deciding.

My mother is making my cake. We are using a layer of butter cream with fondant over it.  Fondant comes in different flavors, but plain fondant isn't that good.  but like everyone else says, it can be peeled off easily.
The texture is a little odd, that's about the only thing that really gets me whenever I eat it. It's a little chewy.
Fondant does makes the cake look better (cleaner, sharper). With buttercream you tend to see streaks and it's not real smooth.

I'd also have a tasting before I made a decision.

I agree with the people who say taste it first. You should be doing a taste test for your cake as well as your reception menu.
My baker did my sister's cake, and she did a full layer of buttercream, with fondant on top. It tasted and looked amazing. You shouldn't have to sacrifice taste OR look if you find the right baker. Even my fiance who is not a fan of fondant said that he liked that cake. The same woman is doing our wedding cake in a similar fashion. My fiance though is getting his own groom's cake with just buttercream icing from his favourite bakery.

I come from a family of professional bakers, my father and mother were the baker and decorator at my dad's family bakery and my mom's uncle was the baker and decorator at his bakery. Growing up in a bakery my opinion is to go with buttercream. While fondant looks nice it does not taste nice and I know from first hand experience that a good baker can get buttercream perfectly smooth.

Fondant is nasty. Go with Buttercream, it can still look really good, you just have to have a good baker

One more thought...an additional option is marzipan.  It's almond-flavored, but has a similar structure and texture to fondant, so it can get you the same look as fondant, but with a delicious (but very sweet!) almond flavor.  It's kind of a cream/light tan color, though, so if you want a pure white cake, this will not work.

I don't like the taste of fondant and I know i can just peel it off, but i still wont waste my money on it if I am just going to peel it off and throw it away. I just want to be able to cut the cake and feed a piece of it to my new hubby without the hassle.
