How MUCH Cake?

I am sure this has already been discussed, but I can't seem to find the thread.

I am planning on having 250 people at my wedding. I am having a wedding cake, and a groom's cake. How many servings should each be?

Let me know!

It depends on how you plan to serve the cakes:  Is your Groom's cake being served to guests or just to wedding party & family?  Will the bride's cake be plated or served on a buffet?  Also- do you want to deal with leftovers?

I know some would say purchase cake for 250, but I say only go that route if you are ok with leftovers-like plan on serving leftover cake at your gift opening open house or next-day brunch.  If you invite 250 guests, you can figure on a percentage not to come...so enough cake for 225 would be ok.  If you serve cake buffet style, less cake is taken...and if you are serving alcohol or serve the cake late in the reception, that also will reduce how much cake is eaten.

Groom's cake are usually not large - 50 servings or less. Only occasionally I'll see one that is larger.

usually a 4 tier to 5 tier can handle 200 or more...depending on how big the slices are and whos eatin the cake...grooms cake is usually a 9x13 or 12x18, however I have stacked grooms cakes before...so bout 50 to 75 servings out of his cake as well...I agree with bridalgal too, it also depends on when and how you serve it with your food as to how much is taken.

The wedding coordinator that I have told me that cake is one of the most wasted item at a wedding. She advised us that if we are planning on 150 guest to get cake for say 125. They are plating and serving it for us. I guess it really comes down to if you want to deal with leftovers.

I haven't gone to any cake tastings yet since I still have basically a year, but I have heard that you can have sheet cakes in the back with the exact flavor, fillings, icing and everything that will be cheaper than if you were to cut from your cake on display. You can still have your cake displayed and as big as you want, just less layers that are edible (they will still look edible to guests) and also cut from that, but it will def. bring down the cost of your overall price of your wedding cake.

Yes . . sheet cakes are budget savers. My friend who recently got married have a small two tier cake that severed some guest but was mostly for pictures and the cake cutting. The rest was served from sheet cakes in back. The guest never saw sheet cakes at all. It saved her at least 100 bucks. She was able to purchase sheet cakes for around 25 bucks and it served I want to say 40 people?? Don't quote me on that but either way it was cheaper.
