Any Vegans out there?

My FI cousin is a vegan (Due to a large amount of allergies) and neither of us knew until his mother told us just a few days ago! She hasn't replied yet with her meal choice which I'm guessing will be none of our meal options. Anyways I had the caterer send over their list of meal options for me to look over again to order a seperate plate for her, but none of his options are vegan friendly. What do I do? I don't just want to give her a really big salad and say there u go, so sorry. Can I ask him to make something seperate? He didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I said I had to look at it again because a guest is vegan. I'm from a small back woods town where everybody either hunts or at least eats meat so he made it seem like I was crazy or making up words or something Undecided. I don't know what to do. Can I tell him to research something to make her??

You have every right to ask the caterer to prepare a vegan meal for one of your guests. Any respectable caterer should be able to come up with a vegan entree, if they refuse then I would raise some serious hell. If they are still clueless, you could always print off a recipe and give it to them.

I am vegan and every wedding I have gone to they have a special meal for me. Explain the details of what a vegan is if you think they don't understand. As PP said they need to figure out for you. If they don't know then get a simple dish that is in line with your food and send it to them.

I agree with PPs, your caterer should be able to prepare something.  Check with your cousin to make sure that you know what his veganism entails (you could assume no eggs, dairy, or meat, but some vegans are more restrictive) and if he has any further restrictions because of his allergies.  Instead of telling your caterer you need a "vegan" meal, you can say you need a meal that has no eggs, dairy, or meat.  If the caterer gave you a list of vegetarian options that aren't vegan, maybe you can suggest an alteration to one of them to make it vegan.

If your cousin has extensive allergies, it might be a good idea to check in with him before you give the vegan option your final ok to make sure it's something he can actually eat.  It's considerate of you to make sure he can eat, and it would suck if the item prepared just for him was actually something he couldn't have.

If the caterer really can't be trusted to make something truly vegan, maybe he could heat up and serve something that you buy frozen from the grocery store? I'm pretty sure there are things like vegan bean chili that you can buy pre-packaged.

I would be worried based on the caterers response that he would make something supposedly vegan but it is secretly sauteed in butter or something.

Great advice thanks. I'm going to try to get ahold of FI cousin first and see what his restrictions are (because honestly I don't know much about vegan cooking). Then I'll contact the caterer and go from there! :)

Same. I'd go over the choices and see what couldbe veganized. Remember some items, like mashed potatoes or vegetable soup, might contain hidden non-vegan items like chicken stock or butter.

Does the caterer have vegetarian options? Maybe you can post them and we can give you ideas for vegan meals.
