price per slice

Hello, I have my first cake tasting on Sunday and I'm just wondering on the average price per slice... Seems the higher end bakeries in my area are starting at $6 or $7 per serving, to me this seems a bit excessive. I've seen prices for other bakeries as low as $3 or $4 per serving. 

I don't think I want anything too elaborate; no sugar flowers or gum paste, not even fondant. I just want a really delicious flavor combination with buttercream finish. Probably a simple to moderate design to cooridinate with my stationary. But overall just a beautiful white wedding cake. 

Am wondering what other brides in other areas are paying (on average) for wedding cakes. Was there a price limit that you didn't feel was necessary to cross? 

I know it also depends on how many guests you're planning to serve. My wedding is in the 85 count range... planning to order a cake that serves 100, just in case we end up with more guests than expected (total invites are at 108). We are also having a full Vienese dessert bar in addition to cake, so there should be plenty of sweets for everyone, and if we end up with left over cake I'm fine with that

I think it depends what area you live in. My fiancee's sister got married in Napa and the price was $9 slice. I am getting married in Carmel and the price is $15 slice. My venue requires we use their cake. We are having nothing fancy so the price qwas $15, where we were quoted it could be up to $30 a slice. I read on some of the posts how crazy that is but it is hard to compare different locations. 

I was almost not going to have a cake because it was so expensive but cake is my favorite part of any event.

We're paying $6.50 for the slices of cake that come from the pretty cake (about half the approx guests I think) and $4 for the sheet cake.

I second grocery store, or even Sams Club or Costo for simple buttercream cakes.  I actually found a small bakery near me that did a beautiful 3 tier buttercream cake for about $2.80 a slice.   They are out there, you just have to do some digging.
