Ice Cream Bar vs. Traditional Cake

Ok, so here is the deal: I am not a cake person. My fiance is a dessert person (he pretty much just loves sugar)

We are trying to find ways to cut costs and as it turns out cakes are expensive and out reception has a dessert fee of $1 per person and an additional cake cutting fee. Not cool, but I understand it. And this is not even including the cake itself and the delivery fee.

There is alternative: an Ice Cream Bar. Our reception has a deal going on with a local ice cream shop near by that has makes an ice cream bar much cheaper than having a cake.

The problem? Would it be weird? It's for an August wedding so we know it's very likely it'll be a hot day so ice cream may be just what people need. At the same time people expect a wedding cake.

Thoughts?

DH threw a birthday party for me this week with an ice cream bar instead of a cake.
  • It's your wedding, serve the dessert you want. I can understand your reluctance to pay $1 per person just to have a cake there, over and above the cost of the cake. That's steep.

We had an ice cream sundae bar brought out as a later evening snack around 9 pm. Our caterer had the 3 standard types of ice cream, plus raspberry sorbet (upon my insistence). There were multiple liquid toppings, sprinkles, crushed Oreos, the standard toppings.

FYI: I had them put a scoop of raspberry sorbet in my champagne glass and then I poured champagne over it. Delicious!
  • We went to a wedding with a ice cream bar, in August actually, and it was amazing!! They have a assembly line system (one employeed scooped, one did hot fudge/carmel and one did nuts/sprinkles etc) and it went quickly and it was sooooo good! My FI had begged for this verses cake, but we got him on the dessert bar train instead. Good luck!
  • That is a wonderful idea.  That cake cutting fee thing always burns me.  If I am paying for everything else in your establishment, you can cut my damm cake for free!!
  • I didn't vote.  I think you can do a small cake just to cut for ceremonal purposes and not serve it, just have your fi take it home (if he likes cake).  But for sure, I like the ice cream bar idea.  Most people won't want to eat cake anyway, but most likely will want some ice-cream.

  • I don't like cake either and I'd be all for an ice cream bar. You can "cut" into a feed each other a spoonfull of sundae.

  • I vote for ice cream. My venue wants to charge me a $5 cutting fee PER PERSON. No way are we having cake now. It'll be $1000 by the time it's served!

  • I love the ice cream bar idea..I'm also not a big cake person but I love ice cream and most people like ice cream as well.  No need to get a cake because your told that's what you do at a wedding if you don't like cake than why serve it, have some other sweets instead.

I love the ice cream bar too, especially since we had one also. BUT, we had that in addition to cake since it came with the venue. I think a higher percentage of guests will appreciate cake vs ice cream. So if you had to pick between the two, then go for the cake.
  • we are doing a sundae bar, also. neither of us like cake and most of my family doesn't either. waste of money in my view. so personally I vote ice cream! Smile
  • I vote for ice cream because it sounds like that's what you want, and that's the beauty of having YOUR wedding... you are allowed to do what you want!  I too am not a huge cake person, but I looooove ice cream... if I was having a summer wedding, I would probably seriously consider this myself!

Btw, that $1 per person charge just to have the cake and that's not inclusive of the cutting... RIDICULOUS!
