Dilemma Sparkling Wine or Champagne

OK So my caterer who is already giving me an AMAZING DEAL... Just called me and said one of the wedding he was doing was cancelled and he had already ordered 12 cases of a sparkling wine.  He told me he would gift that in my package if I wanted.

In the mean time I was going to have to pay for 8 cases of champagne from the venue for 2 champagne toasts...    We are having a NYE wedding.

I dont really drink so I am wondering if people really know the difference or should I say mind the difference (sparkling wine v. champagne)? I come from a family of beer and cocktail drinkers...

I think it would be insane to turn down this gift... I dont want to be tacky...

Champagne is a sparkling wine.  But the French government highly regulates wine/cheese/etc. so the only sparkling wines that are legally allowed to be called "champagne" are the wines that are grown in the Champagne region in France.

There are thousands of incredibly fine, classy, tasty, and expensive "sparkling wines" that are not "Champagne" because they are made in Italy, Spain, California, etc.  There are also probably a couple crappy "champagnes" made in the Champagne region in France.

    Take that gift!!

I didnt ask the name of it... But I am sure its a good one. I am going to taste it when I go make my last payment...  My sister (who has offered more than her fair share of opinions) said 'For NYE 'we' need to to HARD... Get 'real' Champagne as in Champagne region of France...' Not Nappa Valley ...

Oh by we she doesnt mean my FI and I; she means me and her... lol ... Yes She is oneof those sisters...

You could always use the sparkling wine for the toasts at dinner and then if guests want refills they should be able to have them since there's so much. If you just have to have champage for the NYE toast, then buy enough so everyone can have glass.

You are so lucky. I can't imagine who would know the difference. A lot of people take a small sip and waste the rest. Grab the opportunity and put the saved money towards something that is meaningful to you.

Definitely take that gift!  Even with a limited bar, we are having some alcohol cost issues.  I am so jealous of you right now!

Napa, not Nappa.  If she can't spell the region, I'd question her advice.  There are a lot of areas outside of the Champagne region that produce excellent sparkling wine.

Like the girls said, take the gift. No one will notice the difference. Not even your Sis. ;)

Take the gift. No one will notice, as most people only sip it at the toast and many people waste it.

Take the gift.Regarding Champagne v Sparkling Wine - it is only called champagne if it is from the Champagne Region of France and the methode champagnoise is used to make it.The Italians call their sparkling wine prosecco and the Spanish call it Cava - I call it all yummy!
That being said - I love American Sparkling Wines - Sofia blush made by Coppola Vineyards is awesome - and they also sell it it really cute hot pink energy drink sixed cans - totally cute with a straw.

I agree with everyone else, take the gift, no one will notice the difference. If someone actually takes a sip and says "Wait a minute! This isn't champagne!" then they deserve a prize.
