Cake Tasting?

Hi everyone,
I'm curious to know who had their cake tasting, and how was the experience?
Did you pick up your goodies to try at home, were they delivered to you, or did you go to the bakery and have your tasting there?
What flavors did you try and how were they? What helped you decide on your bakery?

We had our cake tasting a couple of months ago, and it was fun. When we scheduled the appointment, the consultant asked us what flavors we were interested in, and had those ready for us on the day of the appointment. We went into the store and sat down with the baker, who let us try the samples there, but they were in a box for us to take home, since it was a lot of cake.

We tried four flavors: white with mocha, chocolate with chocolate cream cheese, white with lemon, and chocolate with raspberry. They were all very, very good, and we picked the white with mocha and the chocolate with chocolate cream cheese. We looked through the design book and talked about how many tiers we needed, delivery options, etc.

I went through the bakery of a local upscale grocery store chain. I've ordered cakes through them for several years, and think they're the best in town. I'd sampled cakes at a wedding expo and none of them were even close in terms of taste.

We hired a boutique bakery local to the area our wedding was, and did our tasting at their facility. We tried seven flavor/filling combos.

ETA: We decided to go with this bakery because they offered tons of flavors, and were willing to customize new flavors if needed. Also, I really wanted fondant, and they make some of the most delicious fondant I've ever had, which was important to me since it can sometimes taste odd.

Our cake was included with our catering contract, so the bakery provided samples when we had our meal tasting.  They gave us ten mini slices of cake with different flavors of cake, icing, and filling, and we wound up bringing it home because we were so full from the apps and entrees.  They also showed us a look book of different styles to choose from, or we could get a custom design (for an upcharge).  We were allowed to pick any two combinations of cake/filling, and one of two icings for the whole thing (or more flavors for an upcharge).

The experience for me was pretty easy and painless.  I had initially thought we'd need a custom cake design but I really liked one of their options so we went with that.  I don't remember all of the flavors; we knew right away we didn't want chocolate or a fruit filling so that helped us decide.  We didn't get a choice of bakery, though if we hadn't liked it we would have paid extra to bring in a different cake; luckily, they use a really good local bakery that I might have chosen myself, so it wasn't an issue.

We had ours delivered to our parents house where we were staying.
Our baker came with the 2 flavors that we were interested in and we got 2 BIG blocks of it!
We decided to go with them because their website was informative, she was great to talk to and work with and her work was beautiful!

We've had a few where we pick up the samples, eat them at home, and the baker called within 24-72 hours to see what we thought. We still haven't decided on a baker (we're going to a tasting event on Sunday) but I just like getting free cake ;-)

We went to 3 different bakeries (don't do anymore--that's too much cake! haha).  2 of the bakeries gave us about 10 diff. flavors to try and we wrote down our favorites.  1 only gave us 4 flavors.

Have them show you a photo book of their designs and give you a price quote too.
