Is this expensive (or cheap) for cake??

I don't know what the usual or average cost of a wedding cake is. Is a total of $620 (150 cupcakes plus small cake at top, includes delivery, setup, and tower rental) more than I should be paying, or is that a good deal??

How does that compare to a wedding cake (decorated with fondant etc.) for 150?

Are cupcakes generally a better deal than cakes?

Thanks :)

  • I don't know about DC, but it's an expensive area like SF, right? $620 works out to about $4 per serving (counting the small cake as 5 servings). $3 wouldn't be tons for a specialty cupcake in a bakery, and you're getting delivery, setup, and rental.

I don't know about the cost of cupcakes v. a tiered cake. Here's a site for a really yummy bakery that dares to put prices online, to give you some sense of prices outside of the magazines. The magazines, BTW, say cake can cost $2-20/slice.

  • sounds reasonable to me. i ordered a cake in vegas to feed 40-45 people and it cost me $651. this is a 6x8x10 with fondant and filling plus delivery fee and a refundable pillar deposit

  • I am a baker....www.ashleyscreations.org and I would have charged  you at least 200$ less for cupcakes. The wedding cakes are usually around that price, not cupcakes. I say, search around. You are getting ripped off, cupcakes take nothing to make and are not expensive to make. Wish you were closer!!
  • Depends on the detAils of the cake. I have talked to a baker and it would have been the same for cupcakes or cake.

  • I think cupcakes are cheaper... but the average is 3.50 a slice. If you're not sure check with another baker to compare prices.

I have to say, that is probably the LEAST professional website I've ever seen.

<div>She also lives in DC. Everything, especially food and dining services, are way more expensive here than most other parts of the country. For example, I pay twice the cost to rent a 1 bed apt here than I did for a 3 bed/2 bath in the mid west. So yes, cost of cupcakes will be inflated here. </div><div>
</div><div>OP- I would just price check a few more places in the area. If you're not comfortable paying $600, you may be able to do a small tier as planned and supplement with sheet cakes (very economcal from grocery stores and guests won't notice). </div>
  • I don't really have much experience for cakes, but I would deffiantly look around.

I contacted two local bakers for a 3 tier cake with fondant decorations (draping and flowers), buttercream icing to feed 100. One baker wanted 600 (and she said the price could change by the time of my wedding) and the second wanted 300, who seemed to have better quality by her website!
