    I'm DIYing my dessert bar but we're have a small informal wedding. Are you planning to?

    Not a chance.  I worked with a woman who did this and she was so fustrated that it nearly ruined her wedding.  These cakes are nowhere close to easy to make.

    Definitely not.  I think these blog posts about making a wedding cake (not for her own wedding, though) could be helpful http://smittenkitchen.com/category/wedding-cake/. Some things I'd never even think about.

    I'm making my own cake, but I've made wedding cakes (stacked ones) before and I'm enlisting the help of my mother to keep it a little less stressful.

    I did. It was the single most stressful part of the entire wedding. If you do decide to go this route, be sure you check with your venue. Some won't allow any food not made in a licensed kitchen to be brought into the venue for liability issues.

    My sister's doing mine. But then we're just doing a small one with sheet cakes. She says she can do it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    I make cakes and wedding cakes as a hobby. I have done several wedding cakes. I would NEVER make my own. I know the time and stress that goes in to those. No way I am doing that to myself before my wedding.

    My mom offered to make my cake. She's done some cakes before, but honestly I am alittle nervous! I trust her that it will turn out great. I just hope it doesn't stress her out too much, well more than she already is! I've thought about making the groom's cake myself, and with the help of a friend. It may not be the best decision for everyone, but to those who are going with the DIY approach; good luck!

    My FMIL asked to do mine, and I said yes. She's done all of her childrens' cakes, so she knows what the undertaking is all about. Plus, as our catering package comes with dessert, the cake doesn't have to be amazing... We're thinking of having something relatively simple (i.e., no edible flowers or other labor-intensive flourishes) but I like the little spacers in between layers on those square cakes! Wondering how hard that would be...

    i'm having a family friend do mine, but it's going to be cupcakes.
    if you've never done anything of that size before, def do a test run. with layers. don't just make one tier and think it'll work out.

    Well I was all HELL YEAH I'M DOING MY CAKE!!!  And then I read some PPs comments and you are all scaring the hell out of me.

    It's just a cake!!!  How evil can it be? 

    I also find fondant disgusting so.  You know.  I won't be struggling with that part.

    So every sweet with sour is tempered still that maketh it be coveted the more For easy things that may be got at will most sorts of men do set but little store. Why then should I account of little pain That endless pleasure shall unto me gain?

    I've made cakes for years, birthday, shower and some very large wedding cakes.  I will not be doing mine because no way do I want to spend that much time leading up to my wedding baking and decorating cakes.  Besides, it's included in our venue.  If it wasn't, I still wouldn't.

    Nope.  I'm DIYing my dessert bar but the cake (the center of the dessert bar) will be made by a professional.  I'm also having mini cheesecakes in three flavors, cookies and a grooms cake.

    My MOH is making cupcakes and arranging them in the shape of a cake, but I've been toying with the idea of making a rice krispie cake. Three tiers of rice krispie and some fresh fruit as a topper. Seems simple, but I haven't looked into it. My cousin, who is a chef, is going to help out.

    I"m having cupcakes - Me and my BM's and a couple other friends are going to get together at the church (with 6 ovens) a few days before the wedding, and bake the cupcakes and frost them the next day.

    First time posting and was looking for cake ideas...I cannot even imagine trying to deal with baking a cake ON MY WEDDING DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Whaaaat?????

    My maid of honor is getting married two months after me and shes doing cupcakes for her wedding its going to be great and then shes putting them in a tier holder like a cake with different flavors we're having a party the night before her wedding and doing them together

    That was our problem.  I would have made our wedding cake in a heartbeat (as I do so on the side,) but our venue doesn't allow homemade goods (county health code regulations.)  All food brought in has to be from a licensed kitchen/bakery.

    I'm defiantly going to give it a shot.  I've done multi-tiered cakes in the past for family parties but since this is going to be the most important cake I'll ever make, I'm really upping the anti on this one.  My expectations for my cake might be a little higher than most DIYers but I have quite a bit of experience and know what I can pull off.  Let me tell you a few things to consider before you go down this road.  Number one, and most important, you'll need a few trial runs.  And I mean at least two full runs.  You'll need to make sure the flavor is good, that the recipe isn't finicky, that the cake stacks well and won't collapse into itself (cake is very heavy), that you have a reliable buttercream or fondant recipe, that you'll have a safe place to store the cake, that you can pull off whatever decretory elements you plan on using and preferably that you have someone VERY trustworthy to take the cake to your reception site so you don't have to worry about it on your big day.  You'll want to make sure that if you're really going to do it, that you know at least six months ahead of time because if you decide it's too much you'll have to find a baker fast.  Let me also tell you that baking takes time so this isn't a project you want to start the night before your wedding when you get home from work.  I'm actually going to take the day before off to do this and my favors but you might not have that luxury and defiantly want to take that into consideration.  Also some of the things I'm thinking about take some skill like sugar flowers, molded fondant and the like and if you're planning on doing those things you'll defiantly want to find out how skilled you are in those areas long before the day of reckoning arrives.
    I'm doing this because I know I can and I'd rather save the money on something I know I can do than pay someone what would be a thousand plus dollars to do for me.  But don't think that your cake dreams have to be grandiose, a small simple cake would be completely do-able and beautiful.  And take solace in the fact that as long as it tastes good, people won't care about anything else.

    i can't bake or cook so that would be out of the question for me.. i just wonder how my FI is going to be able to handle my bad cooking once we get married Laughing

    We are doing cupcakes (but by a professional). If I trusted myself, I would have made them!

    However, I am DIYing the cupcake stand.

    Yes i am, i am a pretty creative person when it comes to things i want to do. my moms been trying to convince me to go to a baker but theres no way im going to pay like 500 dollars for a cake. Its pretty easy accually for me, im a great baker and making my own fondont out of marshmellow and food coloring. (red) and making black ribbon and black roses...its going to look amazing and i cant wait to show everyone what ive accomplished...if not SHAWS hea we come lol!!!!!
