Re: Naked Cakes?

  • I vote not.  I will he honest though - I love good frosting.  Naked cakes hold absolutely no appeal to me and I find them unattractive.  I also think you could run the risk of a dryer cake. No bias there....
  • I vote not. I love me some frosting!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I don't think they look nice, and they seem like they would dry out faster.
  • I agree they would dry out quickly, unless you kept them covered until just before serving time. If you're not really into frosting, you could maybe do some kind of fruit filling in between layers to add moisture? Or ask your baker to make more of a whipped frosting so it's not painfully sweet?

  • I love a chocolate cake on a cherry pie filling base, no icing. Also, a dusting of icing powder can be very pretty: http://weddbook.com/media/805196/cakes
  • I would be really sad!

  • I had a friend host a sunrise wedding ceremony followed by a brunch.  Dear god, that was early!  Instead of a tradtional wedding cake, she had naked bundt cakes on cake plates that were elevated.  She decorated the bundt cakes with edible flowers around the cake plates.

While the naked cakes fit in this situation, I don't think they would fit for a traditional evening ceremony and reception.

    Um....well....

    IF IF IF...

if it's a pound cake, bundt cake - you know, that sort-of cake, and you have a big bowl of chantilly whipped cream, decorate it with sliced fruit, whole berries, sugared cherries or the like, or edible/organic flowers - something pretty - and maybe also have a swirl of raspberry, chocolate, lemon, vanilla, or caramel sauce on the plate before putting on each serving....could be ok. I'd have some for display with the fruit or flowers, and the rest wrapped AIR TIGHT in seran wrap to keep them moist, even with a sauce plating and a whipped cream dollop.

  • I say no.  I think they look unfinished.

The whole point of cake is as a delivery system for the frosting.
  • Lol, delivery system, :) Ladies you are right, naked cakes are probably better iff eaten right away! And i dont think my pastry chef is going to wake up early to bake it the morning of the wedding. Might be a little bread crumby....
  • Yay! Glad to see you've come around.  Moist cake is truly the best...frosting locks that in.  Plus, if you don't like frosting you can just eat around it, but there's no going back with a naked cake. =)
