Is it rude to ask cake maker to use a specific recipe?

Okay, just to clear things up, I'm not using a "baker," my aunt is making my cake. We want a lemon cake with raspberry filling and I've found a lemon cake recipe that I love. I've tried others and they are dry or really tart. Lemon I think is tricky.

Would it be rude to ask her if she'd use a specific recipe?

Re: Is it rude to ask cake maker to use a specific recipe?

  • I don't think so, especially since it is family.  Our venue says they are happy to accommodate special recipe requests and I would think family would be even more flexible.
  • Not if you are asking an aunt.  It would be border line if it was a baker.  Some would be fine others would be offended.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I think if you tell her 'most recipes are too tart or too dry', that might be borderline rude.

On the other hand, how could she be offended by, "This is my favorite lemon cake recipe, and I'd love to have it for my wedding cake because it is just so good!"
