Cake Flavors-what do you think?

 We are having a 12" x 9" x 6" cake, with buttercream icing.

The bottom layer is definitely going to be Red Velvet with buttercream (filling as well as outside)-it's what my Grandmother always used to make, my entire family loves it, and it's been my dream cake. :)

For the 9": Fiance is thinking chocolate with raspberry filling, my mom thinks it'd be better with strawberry filling...

6": something a little simpler-for those who may want something more traditional....marble cake with buttercream.

To add just one more slight complication.....Mom thinks that if we're doing something 'so fancy' for the bottom layer, we should make the center layer the marble with buttercream, and just have the top layer be the chocolate and fruity filling....

So my question(s) are these:

1. Does chocolate cake with strawberry or raspberry filling sound yummier?

2. Should the middle layer be the 'plain' layer, or the smallest layer?

Neither of these really matter to me, it's really just a popular opinion type of thing.....(we're also have a vintage-candy table, so plenty of sweets for everyone)

Thanks, ladies!!:)

Honestly, I can see where your mom is coming from, however you already know your side will love the bottom layer, as it sounds like it's expected for your event. I'd do Choc/Rasp (because I think it's better than choc/strawberry any day) for the middle layer. But that's just me.   Also, maybe consider doing a fully chocolate layer and doing a white/raspberry for the "simple" flavor. I know a lot of friends/family don't like pairing chocolate with a fruit, but again, this is more to your tastes. GL

I think a lot of people like Chocolate/Raspberry (and definitely go with Raspberry over strawberry!) I, too, would make that my second layer.

You can do whatever you want for your top. It seems like you aren't straying too far from classic flavors (choc. rasp. and red velvet are extremely popular). I would even go crazier with the small layer

I also prefer chocolate/raspberry over chocolate/strawberry and if that's what your FI really likes, I don't think it's a problem to have it as the middle layer.  Ditto PP suggestion to think about doing a white layer for the top.  I have one friend who can't eat chocolate b/c it gives her migraines and other people who just plain don't like chocolate...so it would be nice to have a layer for people who can't/don't eat chocolate.

    1. Does chocolate cake with strawberry or raspberry filling sound yummier? Honestly, I'm not a fan of fruit fillings at all in cakes, but I know a lot of people are so you will please people with that option. However, I love strawberry flavoring and don't like raspberry, so if I had to choose between the two, I'd definitely go with strawberry. I don't know many people who don't like strawberries. Think about how much people love chocolate covered strawberries, and if you went with the strawberry filling with the chocolate cake, it'd be similar.

    2. Should the middle layer be the 'plain' layer, or the smallest layer? I think the middle layer should be the "plain" layer because then you can satisfy a lot more people who are picky eaters.

    Raspberry

We made our middle layer the "plain" (white with raspberry filling) and the smallest layer the chocolate.  (However, the venue gave everyone a slice of chocolate and a slice of our "fancy" tier which was tres leches, so we ended up bringing the entire white with raspberry tier home!)

    We had too much cake.

Thanks ladies! I understand what you're saying about having the 'plain' layer as the middle layer...FI and I will talk that one over... And, TEA, I never thought about some people not liking chocolate...although I don't know anyone attending who doesn't!:) Maybe a good compromise would be what Stephanie did with the raspberry filling in a white layer, and a small chocolate or marble layer....hmmmm...getting hungry!:) Good thing we have such a fantastic baker, not have to mak a final decision until a week before the wedding! :)
