Fake Cake Question

I'm not sure how many people actually do this, but I'm thinking of getting a sheat cake from my favorite bakery and then having a fake cake made somewhere else that will be for the initial cutting and be beautifully decorated. Of course I think this means that part of the cake has to be real. The main reason I want this done is because the way my venue is set up it would be much easier to have a sheat cake in the back already cut up to have the servers bring out for guests and the bakery that I love does not do any tiered cakes.

So how does that typically work? Do you have a cake with all layers fake except for one? My venue is fairly nice so would this be a bit out of touch? I'm just not sure.

Re: Fake Cake Question

  • I agree wtih PP.

Our wedding is 200+ guests. we have a 3 tier 'display' cake (real), which we'll cut and then will be served. that cake only serves about 100. an undecorated sheet cake will be in the back to supplement the other 100ish pieces.

fake cakes just seem silly, and are typically not all that much cheaper.  Also, if your bakery doesn't do tiers, you could also have an 'arrangmeent' of cakes: http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/40682_428707330998_154662495998_4803101_360387_n.jpg
one of my friends did soemthing similar, and it was actually really cute!

also, many of the weddings iv'e been to have the B&G cut the cake just prior to dinner, so that the staff have time to cut and serve it for dessert.

  • Gym: I LOVE that assortment idea. We have a large wooden table for the cake and this would go so perfectly on it!

  • i actually looked into this .. and while you do still have to pay for it to be decorated it  was aLOT cheaper than getting a tiered cake... i decided on cupcake tier instead
  • I make cakes as a hobby and this approach would be a lot more cost effective. The bottom tiers would all be styrofoam and the top tier real cake. No-one will know the difference and as most places cut the cake for thhe guests in the back they won't know. Of course you still have to pay for the decoration but if you don't want sugar flowers and detail work it shouldn't be too expensive!

  • We are having a fake cake (3 tiers) where a slice is real. But instead of having sheet cake cut in back. We're having 10in cakes as a centerpiece in the middle of all the tables that resemble a tier from our fake cake. All will be a different flavor so it can be a way to get guests mingling. :) and keep all their bellies full of cake!
