My FI and I have been to two cake tasting and each gave us completely different results. What sizes are each of your tiers and how many people are you feeding?
3-tier round cake to feed 70 people. I thought this was a good size (I saw a similar one in their fake cake displays, maybe a little less than 2 feet tall?
The standard catering hall measurement is 1"x2" for a slice of cake.
My baker is making a 2 tier cake: bottom layer is 10" and top is 6". That serves 50 people, though he said that's with a 2"x2" slice. If our caterer uses the typical 1"x2" cut, we'll get more servings. Each of your bakers should be able to tell you what size they estimate when calculating servings.
Someone told me that round cakes feed more than square ones. Not sure if that is true or not. At any rate, I am having a 3 tiered, hexagonal cake.
There are various cake pans sizes as well as shapes: 6", 8", 10", 12", 14",16" (that is round sizing - the odd shaped pans will be a bit different).
There are round, square, oval, hexagonal, heart-shaped, even diamond cake pans I saw recently (looked very interesting too!), so you need to consider the shape and sizes when adding up the slices.
A two tier 9 amd 6 feeds 32. Will feed 25 as long as it makes it through secruity in the airport with my friend and too my event in one piece (yes TSA says you can take a cake).
We are having 5 tiers to feed about 250 people...we could have gotten more but we are keeping our top tier for our 1st anniversary. All tiers are round.
We are doing a 3 tiered round cake with one decorative cake on each side.
We'll be feeding 200. My favorite part is that the cakes are "Smith Island Cakes"- a 10 layered tradition from the Eastern Shore of MD where we live. Since our wedding is in the fall, we'll have pumpkin and red velvet along with the traditional white cake- all frosted in white buttercream. Yay!
We are doing sheet cakes- 2 on display and at least 2 in the back. One cake will be shaped like Montana (12x18 ish), and one will be North Dakota (10x12 ish). The cakes will be decorated with a few landmarks that are special to us and we are going to have the bride & groom cake topper kissing over the border. This was actually FI's idea- granted he wanted to do it with lasagna, but settled for cake instead. We are both strongly tied to our own state and since we live on the border we thought this would be very cool and unique and unexpected.
Re: What size is your cake?
1 sheet to feed 100 people.
