Don't like cake~what's an alternative?

So in thinking about what to have for dessert, I realized that the traditional wedding cake just isn't going to cut it for us.  We both don't like cake and the cupcakes idea has been done by too many of our friends.  So in the spirit of being unique (but definitely not easier), we would like to do something else for a dessert, but that's where the problem comes in: what else can you serve to guests for a great dessert?

Was thinking some sort of mousse or crème-type recipe in martini glasses, but I would LOVE input on what yummy treats are out there.  Oh and cake pops will be the wedding favors on the table, so they are spoken for :)

Thank you! Thank you! Laughing

  • You can have anything you want for dessert (assuming your caterer can make it).  What's your favourite thing - pie? Brownies?  Ice cream sundaes?  Seriously, it's your wedding, personalise it any way you want.

  • Agree - anything!  You might consider having a small cake for those of your guests who look forward to the wedding cake (some really do), but otherwise, just use your imagination.  What kinds of things do you really like?  Ideas I've seen or heard of are:

rice krispy treats (they can even be shaped and decorated like a cake)
    ice cream sundae bars
    Krisy Kreme donut towers
    Croquembouche (cream puff tower)
    cheesecakes
    fruit cobblers
    any kind of pie
dessert shots (mini parfait type things in different flavors)
two-bite desserts like brownies, petit fours, eclairs, whoopie pies
action station desserts like cherries jubilee, bananas foster (the flambe thing is cool)
  • You can have whatever desserts that you want but I would suggest adding some cake to the list.  The reception is for your guests and I can guarantee that there are a lot of cake lovers out there even if you and your FI aren't two of them.

  • Ooo. I like the idea of a sundae bar. You could also just do a whole dessert table with a bunch of different desserts arranged in a pretty way. I think if I did that, I would make them all sort of small sizes, so guests could choose two or three each.

We didn't want a traditional wedding cake, so we had a dessert buffet with: blueberry crisp with homemade ice cream, chocolate fondue, fresh fruit sorbet, chocolate cake, lemon cake, and milk shooters with chocolate chip cookies.

I think a creme or mousse dessert is okay, but I'm not sure how many people like that kind of thing (I don't love it, but I'm not really one to turn down dessert, so if that's all you had, I would eat it).  You could also have a plate of assorted small desserts--brownies, cheesecake, fancy cookies, etc.--put on each table for guests to have with their individual dessert.

ETA: Also, our first course was gazpacho served in a martini glass, if you like the idea of using a martini glass and want other ways to do it besides dessert.
  • We're having a traditional wedding cake; however, our cake baker also bakes for a local inn and we had their strawberry rhubarb pie with chocolate strawberries for dessert and I had her add it to the dessert selection.

I really didn't think our guests should pass up on it...it was delicious! Do whatever makes you happy :)

  • My brother and his wife did donuts from her favoritedonut shop at their wedding, and it was a BIG hit.

  • You could have a viennese station (dessert bar) of various small dessert samplers like the dessert shots, mini cookies, italian pastries, tarts, etc.
  • I am loving these ideas!!!!  You have all giving me many delicious things to think about Laughing
  •  I have been to weddings that did not serve cake.  Instead I have seen ice cream, cookies, pies, candy,  dessert buffets etc.   Generally the bride and groom kept the cut the dessert tradition with their desert of choice.  Splitting a trifle served in a martini glass would serve that function very well.
  • Aling with the ice cream idea I went to a wonderful italian wedding that had gelato that was amazing. People stood in line to get it an even went back for seconds.

I agree with the other posters that you can have whatever kind of dessert you would like.

One idea is that you having cake pops you could always do a candy bar. Otherwise some people love cheesecale as an option were people have there own topping option like chocolate, strawberries, blueberries, caramel, ect...
  • you wouldnt be able to do this in wine glasses, but what about creme brulee? have an assortment of fruits and things to add to the top, then crack with a spoon and devour the delicious custard!

if you are stuck on the wine glass thing, why not a parfait bar?

<div>I disagree with this. If you choose ice cream or another dessert, sure there will be guests that don't like it, but I also know a lot of people who don't like cake (me included!) No matter what you choose, there will be those who don't like it as much, but people like me will appreciate you moving away from tradition. And those who don't like your dessert can just skip it, as I and all of the other cake haters have done for years! :)</div>
  • My Uncle got married a few years ago, and he did a bunch of different types of cheesecakes.  It was a huge hit!  From chocolate, and strawberry to plain.  It was a great variety for picky people as well
  • You guys have given me SO many good things to consider!!  I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who isn't a cake fan either Wink  I get a lot of wide-eyed looks when I tell people that.
