cookies over cake?

Our wedding is set for 12/15/2012... although I am not going with a "christmas" theme, I thought a christmas cookie bar would be really festive. We would have special boxes that guest could take home filled with cookies, but also to enjoy during the reception. With all these cookies would we still need to serve cake? Would just a small cake for the bride and groom be tacky? Any easy festive cookie recipies out there? help! Thanks!

Especially if cookies are doubling as favors, I would have cake as well. I think cake (or an alternative substantial dessert) is more important that the cookie bar. Maybe do cupcakes and cookies, and then a small cake for the bride and groom.

I think it would be weird to have cake for the bride and groom but not offer any kind of cake for your guests.  I agree with PP that you should have another dessert if the cookies are meant to be taken home--I might be a little confused about dessert if their were boxes out.

I agree with PP. If the cookies are acting as a favor, then still have some sort of cake/dessert at the reception. If they are not meant as the favor, forego the boxes (maybe just have a few for leftovers after the reception is done) and have them as your actual dessert.

Where I live, cookie tables are always present at weddings, and there is always a wedding cake as well. But, like the others have said, if this is a wedding favor, I would have a cake.

like other PPs said if the cookies are to be taken home then you need to offer some sort of desserts at the actual reception. Plus I love cake and I would be upset if I saw the bride and groom got cake and I didnt (then again I plan to have a pecan tart at my wedding because I love them but cant afford them for all my guests so Im going to go hide away while I eat it)

Definitely have a cake or some kind of dessert if the cookies are doubling as favors.  Like some PPs, I love cake and would be disappointed if it wasn't an option, but even more if I saw the bride and groom cut a cake when I wasn't going to get to eat any.

mmm I love cookies and highly prefer them to cake!  but i still think if they are doubling as favors their should be a cake too (or another dessert option).  I don't like the idea of a cake just for the b&g.  That just seems weird to have everyone watch you eat something that they may want but can't have!

In general as long as you provide a sweet treat post-dinner you are set.

However, I think it would be strange to have the B&G cut and eat cake and everyone else gets cookies.  You need to eat what your guests are eating.

I would be so disappointed without cake.

I understand that not everyone is a "cake" person, but I would definitely have a more substantive dessert at the very minimum.

I just came from a wedding that had a big cookie to cut for the pictures, but the desserts for the reception were 5 different kinds of homemade cookies. There were so many people with different allergies including gluten or diabetic, it was just the best way that everyone got something. And it was awesome! They were so good, and no one questioned not having a traditional cake!
