How do I keep bugs off my cake?

I need to know how to keep moths and other flying bugs off my cake. Here are the conditions: I am getting married/having reception in May, in Louisiana, at night, about 4 feet from a lake. I know we are going to need lights to see but how do I keep bugs off my beautiful buttercream icing cake? I am using battery powered christmas lights everywhere and candles for the lighting. Would a makeshift tent type thing work? I was thinking we could make a frame out of PVC pipe (painted of course) with tulle hanging off of it, to cover it and keep the big bugs out. Is this good enough or is there something else I could do?

Your idea should work, I wouldn't see why not.

You may want to change your mind about the buttercream icing and go with fondant instead.  Remember not all fondant is the same, some tastes good others not so good.  Ask your baker if you can try a bite of what they use.

I think something that will make a big difference is how long you have the cake outside. We got married in Hawaii and had a buttercream cake outdoors - but we only had it out for about an hour. If you do the cake cutting at the beginning of the reception (after a cocktail hour), that also gives your servers plenty of time to plate it up.

Instead of building a tent to cover it, you could use one of those organza or tulle mosquito nets they sell as bed drapes at IKEA.  You might even be able to dye it to match your colors.

Have you asked on your local board?  Or some wise people who have lived in your area all their lives?  I am sure someone in your area has run into such a dilemma and may have a solution.

I was reading on a website that dryer sheets repel bugs and insects.  Now, i have no clue how you would or could do that, but perhaps you can think of a way.
