Incorporating Sheet Cakes

We are on a pretty tight budget, and I just don't have much preference for cakes. Therefore, all the options are a bit overwhelming. Trying to get things started, but I just don't know where to start. What is a good price?
We are planning for around 350. Would cupcakes be impossible?
Also, we have heard of people having a top tier that is real with something small under it. And then having sheet cake brought out for everyone. Is this even a possibility?

I almost feel like you're asking a Schroedinger's cat kind of question here. Tongue out

    1) We have no idea what "tight budget" means to you. It's a totally subjective term, so until that's defined, we can't take that step any further. A good price for me is probably different than a good price for you. Which brings us to...

    2) Cost of anything is dependant on where you live. You'll get much more detailed responses to this question over on your local board (click Local Wedding Boards over on the left). So yes, lots of people do cupcakes, and yes, it might be possible, but ask this question over on your local.

    3) Yes, people do the Styrofoam layers and sheet cake at the back. Depending on your baker this may serve you tons of money or not very much at all as you still need to pay for the labour involved with decorating the layers. If you do go with the sheet cake in the back, make sure they're the same recipe as the single tier you're displaying. Otherwise, I call that false advertising.

mness90 had a similar question. If you don't get the answers you are looking for here maybe check her post too. I was recently at a wedding where the couple had a very small two tiered cake made for them Bottom tier for the wedding and top for the 1-year anniversary. They had a cannoli bar set up for the guests. If sheet cake works into your budget go for that. Depending on how many guests you have, cupcakes may even work too. I agree with PP to check out your local board to see how much others have paid for at bakeries in your area.

I not trying to be rude, but "tight budge...planning around 350".

Ever think of scaling back on people and scaling up on what you offer your guests that are bringing you expensive gifts that you picked out?

We are doing a 8", 12" 2 tier wedding cake as a "show cake".  Then we are getting 4 sheet cakes form COSTCO $17 each to serve to our 235 guests.

We are having 200 people.  I priced a cake 3 tiers for 350, plus a full sheet that feeds 100 for $100.  Then I thought, wait Costco cakes are only $17.00.  I could get two cost cakes for less that half the prices of the bakery cake.  What a good idea.

Make sure your baker doesn't have a clause in his/her contract about being sole provider of cakes.  The bakery I used had one.  Since I chose that bakery, I had to purchase all my cakes from them.  I couldn't go to Costco, Walmart...to buy sheet cakes to suppliment the amount of servings I needed.  The contract stated that I did buy cake from somewhere else, the bakery would not leave my wedding or refund my money.

Thanks for the idea.  We are having 200 people.  My fiance loves this bakery and the cake for 100 is $200 and we can add 2 costco cakes.  $235 WOW
